Paper or plastic? Neither, say William McDonough and Michael Braungart. Why settle for the least harmful alternative when we could have something that is better--say, edible grocery bags! In Cradle to Cradle, the authors present a manifesto calling for a new industrial revolution, one that would render both traditional manufacturing and traditional environmentalism obsolete. Recycling, for instance, is actually "downcycling," creating hybrids of biological and technical "nutrients" which are then unrecoverable and unusable. The authors, an architect and a chemist, want to eliminate the concept of waste altogether, while preserving commerce and allowing for human nature. They offer several compelling examples of corporations that are not just doing less harm--they're actually doing some good for the environment and their neighborhoods, and making more money in the process. Cradle to Cradle is a refreshing change from the intractable environmental conflicts that dominate headlines. It's a handbook for 21st-century innovation and should be required reading for business hotshots and environmental activists. --Therese Littleton

Book Description

A manifesto for a radically different philosophy and practice of manufacture and environmentalism

"Reduce, reuse, recycle" urge environmentalists; in other words, do more with less in order to minimize damage. As William McDonough and Michael Braungart argue in their provocative, visionary book, however, this approach perpetuates a one-way, "cradle to grave" manufacturing model that dates to the Industrial Revolution and casts off as much as 90 percent of the materials it uses as waste, much of it toxic. Why not challenge the notion that human industry must inevitably damage the natural world, they ask.

In fact, why not take nature itself as our model? A tree produces thousands of blossoms in order to create another tree, yet we do not consider its abundance wasteful but safe, beautiful, and highly effective; hence, "waste equals food" is the first principle the book sets forth. Products might be designed so that, after their useful life, they provide nourishment for something new-either as "biological nutrients" that safely re-enter the environment or as "technical nutrients" that circulate within closed-loop industrial cycles, without being "downcycled" into low-grade uses (as most "recyclables" now are).

Elaborating their principles from experience (re)designing everything from carpeting to corporate campuses, the authors make an exciting and viable case for change.

5 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking Book.......2007-06-19

Cradle to Cradle is so thought provoking about how we should be manufacturing our goods, it should probably be required reading for every economist, business person, government policy-maker, etc. Great food for thought. I believe this has become "the book" to read if you want to understand sustainable living and sustainable manufacturing and commerce.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2007-06-16

This is a great read, informative without being dry and overwhelming.

Not a depressing warning of the bad things to come.

It provides hope, offers the vision of a better world.

If only all the worlds leaders would read this book and learn from it.

5 out of 5 stars Consumers can move toward making ethical choices.......2007-06-10

Inspiring and insightful! Definitely a book that makes one evaluate the choices we make as consumers and consumer choice may be the key to achieving some of the eco-effective methods of production, lifestyle etc that were discussed in 'Cradle to Cradle'. Businesses could then be encouraged to fund the necessary research to achieve the desired outcomes outlined in this book. A lot of the science is already in place to be able to start making definitive moves in the right direction. Governments throughout the world need to take heed of the message this book is sending and begin to legislate so the manufacturers, agriculturalists, loggers, home owners/builders etc must make changes to their modes of operation that are truly 'eco-effective' - what a great term.

4 out of 5 stars rose tinted vision of smarter industry.......2007-06-09

This book is an excellent template for an ideal industrial, "eco-effective" revolution, one in which twin biological and technological "metabolism" mimic and incorporate themselves into natural systems, leaving nothing to waste and accommodating diversity. The book provides a good picture of the way things ought to be, but, in my view, doesn't really address the considerable economic and political obstacles standing in the way of that utopia. Such as a version of capitalism that continually rewards businesses that push their environmental and social costs onto the public purse and future generations. The lack of infrastructure to handle, and make cost effective, a comprehensive cradle-to-cradle product and energy cycle, which would require large initial investment by government and businesses, investments politicians and many business leaders are dead set against, not when they can make enormous profits leaving things the way things are and passing the costs along to someone else. The authors were obviously going for a relentlessly optimistic tone, using mainly moral arguments, but the book's vision of improved design makes perhaps too much sense for the nonsensical globalized deferred-cost world as it stands, on a large scale, not without fundamental political and social changes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-02

The authors' pragmatic way of thinking should be applauded and embraced by heads of state and business. Environmental problems are real threats to our way of life and we must take action to make our consumption practices more sustainable.

"Is it a fact--or have I dreamt it--that, by means of electricity, the world of matter has become a great nerve, vibrating thousands of miles in a breathless point of time?" If you, like Nathaniel Hawthorne, are kept up at night wondering about how things work--from electricity to can openers--then you and your favorite kids shouldn't be a moment longer without David Macaulay's The New Way Things Work. The award-winning author-illustrator--a former architect and junior high school teacher--is perfectly poised to be the Great Explainer of the whirrings and whizzings of the world of machines, a talent that landed the 1988 version of The Way Things Work on the New York Times bestsellers list for 50 weeks. Grouping machines together by the principles that govern their actions rather than by their uses, Macaulay helps us understand in a heavily visual, humorous, unerringly precise way what gadgets such as a toilet, a carburetor, and a fire extinguisher have in common.

The New Way Things Work boasts a richly illustrated 80-page section that wrenches us all (including the curious, bumbling wooly mammoth who ambles along with the reader) into the digital age of modems, digital cameras, compact disks, bits, and bytes. Readers can glory in gears in "The Mechanics of Movement," investigate flying in "Harnessing the Elements," demystify the sound of music in "Working with Waves," marvel at magnetism in "Electricity & Automation," and examine e-mail in "The Digital Domain." An illustrated survey of significant inventions closes the book, along with a glossary of technical terms, and an index. What possible link could there be between zippers and plows, dentist drills and windmills? Parking meters and meat grinders, jumbo jets and jackhammers, remote control and rockets, electric guitars and egg beaters? Macaulay demystifies them all. Book Description

The information age is upon us, baffling us with thousands of complicated state-of-the-art technologies. To help make sense of the computer age, David Macaulay brings us The New Way Things Work. This completely updated and expanded edition describes twelve new machines and includes more than seventy new pages detailing the latest innovations. With an entirely new section that guides us through the complicated world of digital machinery, where masses of electronic information can be squeezed onto a single tiny microchip, this revised edition embraces all of the newest developments, from cars to watches. Each scientific principle is brilliantly explained--with the help of a charming, if rather slow-witted, woolly mammoth.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-05-14

Informative and entertaining. I wonder how many engineers out there first got their interest in the way things work from this book.... In Fall 2008 Macaulay will have a new book out entitled "The Way We Work", which will explain the workings of the human body in similar fashion to this book. Can't wait!

5 out of 5 stars Can't put it down.......2007-05-07

My son (10) had borrowed the older edition from the library several times. So I got him this one for his birthday. He sneaks this book into his bed at night. If that's not an excellent testemony I don't know what is.

5 out of 5 stars Looking at Machines Differently.......2007-02-01

Each page of this book opens up a world of how something works. It could be how to make a hologram (of a wolly mammoth of course) or how the valves in a trumpet change the sound. The subject for a few pages might be electricity or it could be how an automatic transmission works. In any case, the pages are a mixture of drawings (usually with mammoth) showing the nature of the subject, combined with text that further describes what the drawings are showing.

Over a period of many years Mr. Macaulay has developed his drawing style and his understanding of mechanical things which when combined in a book like this offer a painless way for the kid in all of us to learn.

This new edition has been expanded in several areas. This includes coverage on personal computers, space probes and other more recent developments. It's one of those books that's hard to put down once you start reading.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......2007-01-12

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER SEEN. IT IS EXCELLANT FOR ALL AGES.

Product Description

The Uncover series combines the best elements of a book with model elements to help readers truly "uncover" the mysteries of what makes things work. A fascinating three-dimensional presentation allows in-depth, hands-on exploration of the subject at hand. This unique "model" is easily build, deconstructed and re-built layer by layer, system by system just by turning a page, until an understanding of the topic is achieved. The complexities of the human body can be daunting, particularly for children. This book-model combination takes some of the mystery out of how the body works. It covers all the major systems and processes. Children get to look at each system on a different page, then by closing the book, combine them into a whole. 16 pages. Ages 8+

4 out of 5 stars Fun, eye-catching, AND educational.......2007-03-29

I did alot of research to find just the right book for my 7 year old, and am very happy with this book. We both love the way the parts of the body are 3-D in the middle of the book. He can identify most of the parts after just a few sit downs with me. Some of the text is too old for him, but it's easy to simplify the material to age appropriate levels. We will be able to use this book for many more years adding on information as he gets older!

5 out of 5 stars What a "cool" book!.......2007-02-23

My 8 year old daughter has always been fascinated by the human body. I bought this for her as gift and she can't get enough of it. She takes it everywhere we go and is constantly reading it. We went to the doctor's office recently and of course she had her book with her. The doctor was very impressed and kept commenting on what a "cool" book it was. I have to agree, and so does my daughter.

5 out of 5 stars So Cool!.......2007-01-21

We got this for our 4 year old because he was at the stage where he was asking so many questions about how the body works. It is fantastic! I love the little skeleton inside. Every page reveals a different layer that is explained on that page. He loves the book and will actually sit and look at it without my help now. Definitely would recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Teaching Tool.......2007-01-06

The Human Body shown in a three-dimensional presentation allows in-depth, hands-on exploration by kids who can understand each system at a time, until the pages combine into a whole body.
Fabulous buy for kids 5+, in my opinion, because even kids who cannot read can explore the 3-D model.

Book Description

Whether playing at defending their own castle or simply chucking pumpkins over a fence, wannabe marauders and tinkerers will become fast acquainted with Ludgar, the War Wolf, Ill Neighbor, Cabulus, and the Wild Donkey—ancient artillery devices known commonly as catapults. Building these simple yet sophisticated machines introduces fundamentals of math and physics using levers, force, torsion, tension, and traction. Instructions and diagrams illustrate how to build seven authentic working model catapults, including an early Greek ballista, a Roman onager, and the apex of catapult technology, the English trebuchet. Additional projects include learning how to lash and make rope and how to construct and use a hand sling and a staff sling. The colorful history of siege warfare is explored through the stories of Alexander the Great and his battle of Tyre; Saladin, Richard the Lionheart, and the Third Crusade; pirate-turned-soldier John Crabbe and his ship-mounted catapults; and Edward I of England and his battle against the Scots at Stirling Castle.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Way too simple, but OK for kids.......2007-06-29

I find this book to be very superficial when it comes to the real deal. If you're looking for a book on catapults, you're going to get disappointed. This book focuses om making simple small scale models of catapults. I suppose it's great for a weekend project with your wannabe engineer kids, but if you're really interested in pre gunpowder siege warfare, you should rather take a look at Konstantin Nossov's book on siege warfare, which is a really thourough work. Also note that there aren't any metric units for the models, which complicates construction for the common european.

2 out of 5 stars Definitely not worth the money........2007-04-17

I was really dissappointed with this book. Several of the projects are ridiculous, and he didn't do enough research. A few quick searches of the internet reveal that he gets a lot of historical facts wrong.

His first two projects, have nothing to do with anything related to actual catapults. The first is two sticks tied together, and the second is the equivalent of a waterbaloon slingshot. He calls it the "Viking Catapult". Of the ten projects in this book, three of them are modeled on actual historical types of catapults. Two are sub projects, that just show you how to build parts of the catapults, and the other five are things a child could design on thier own. As the one of the other reviewers pointed out, the last project is a plastic spoon catapult game. Small children do this on their own.

Do your self a favor, and download some free plans off the internet.

2 out of 5 stars Perhaps he should name it....Catapults for Kids........2007-01-10

I was disappointed in this book. I was expecting some historically accurate designs and what I received was overly simplified plans presumably designed mostly for children. Yes, most of the text is related to the history of these weapons, but the plans left something to be desired. The ballista plan suggests use of a peanut as ammunition (not a bolt?) and the catch mechanism is nonexistent. The last project is a plastic-spoon-based basketball game. Enough said?

5 out of 5 stars More fun!.......2006-11-10

This is a great book - got a copy for my brother for Christmas, and after taking a look had to get my own copy. I've been wanting to build a trebuchet ever since I saw one as a teenager - here are the plans!

4 out of 5 stars Amusing catapults, interesting history, but no metric units.......2005-07-20

This book contains easy-to-follow instructions on how to build different catapults. Unfortunately there is no data regarding approx. distance and height for the suggested projectiles, why you must try for yourself. All units are english/american, which means you must translate this to metric units if you are more used to that.
A lot of historic background around catapults in general and around each model is given, which makes the book very interesting to read, even if you do not plan to build any of the models.
I can recommend this book to both historically interrested people and those who are more fond of making amusing toys!

As a 3rd Grade School Teacher, I found this book instrumental to my lessons on plant life. Ms. Drizzle and her class answer many of the questions my students come up with before we've read the book so I know that we're reading the right materials for our lessons. Great series for the imagination and for provoking interest in the sciences early in the child's development.

3 out of 5 stars The earlier books are much better.......2004-09-12

We were given a copy of "Magic Schoolbus and the Ocean Floor" as a gift. I then bought "Dinosaurs" and "Senses." There is a difference between the books written only by Joanna Cole and the later books that are basically a comic-book version of the TV show. It takes us a solid 45 minutes to read "Senses", and I even learned some facts. "Plants Seeds" is about a 15 minute read-aloud. I say stick with the earlier books.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2000-04-04

I enjoyed this book very much because it is such a fun way to learn about science. This is the first of many Magic School Bus books I purchased, and I've been hooked ever since.

Book Description

Ten years after Roger Tory Peterson's death, his unique perspective on birding comes to life in these highly personal narratives. Here he relates his adventures during a lifetime of birding and traveling the world to observe and record nature. Whether it is in writing about the time when his boat capsized in freezing water off the coast of Maine while he, then in his eighties, was filming a documentary, or about his experiences searching for the ivory-billed woodpecker, Peterson's sense of adventure and curiosity cannot be extinguished. The accomplished illustrator and writer was nearly as passionate about photography as he was about painting, and each essay is illustrated with Peterson's own photographs. The essays included here were carefully selected by Bill Thompson III, the editor of Bird Watcher's Digest, in which the columns originally appeared.

A decade after his death comes a personal collection which blends color photos and line drawings with a passionate survey of the bird world, selected by the editor of Bird Watcher's Digest which ran his column 'All Things Reconsidered' during the last twelve years of his life. His adventures traveling the world are captured in a set of vivid vignettes perfect for that avid birder.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book.......2007-01-26

This was purchased as a gift, but before I wrapped it I read four of the essays. Enjoyed them very much and learnd some things. It has some excellent illustrations, too. I'm going to buy a copy for myself. Sorry I haven't read more for this review.

5 out of 5 stars Fitting Tribute.......2006-12-27

The author, who died ten years ago, is the well-known originator of the Peterson's Field Guides. This book makes available to a wider audience a selection of columns he wrote for a bird magazine. In them, he takes us all over the world and familiarizes us with a wide variety of birds, other wildlife, and people. His prose style is a beauty in itself. The editor has updated the articles in small but important ways.

The book uses quality paper to enhance the photographs, and quality type. It must be one of the finest books produced so far this century, and at the Amazon price it is truly a steal. All in all, a fitting tribute to the author, who obviously was loved by many. A joy to own, to read, and to recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Another good book from the Exporatorium.......2007-02-12

Most of the Exploratorium books that I have purchased have been activity-based, so they're great for grown-ups (teachers, parents, etc.) who want to lead kids in discovery as well as for the kids who want to try things out for themselves. As a science instructor for elementary-aged students (pre-K through 5th grade), there are several of the activities in this book that I am going to use for my kids, but it seems well suited for the kids themselves because it also gives a lot of basic background information on everything from static to DNA. This particular book from Exploratorium is a bit different from the others because of its extra background information and would be a great book for an elementary-aged child who loves science and wants more information, as well as hands-on activities to explore.

5 out of 5 stars I've been voted "Coolest Grandad"!.......2007-01-10

I am well over 13 years of age! -- I am approaching my 75th birthday. I bought Exploratopia for one of my grandsons and all grandchildren (who have reached the 'use of reason' thought Grandad's present to Aaron the best of all.
Not only is it a book of discovery -- every discovery gives you an experiment that you can to to illustrate what you have just read.
Thank ytou very much!

Book Description

Readers adored his tales as a Yorkshire animal doctor in All Creatures Great and Small and All Things Bright and Beautiful-- now James Herriot treats us to another delightful volume of memoirs rich with his own brand of humor and wisdom.

In the midst of World War Two, James is training for the Royal Air Force, while going home to Yorkshire whenever possible to see his very pregnant wife, Helen. Musing on past adventures through the dales, visiting with old friends, and introducing scores of new and amusing characters-- animal and human alike-- Herriot enthralls us once again with his uncanny ability to spin a most engaging and heartfelt yarn.

I read his books as a teen and loved them. Bought the whole set for my grandsons, [teens]. They laughed until they cried. [so did I].

5 out of 5 stars Like animals?.......2007-03-07

If you like animals you will enjoy all James Herriot's books. This is one of a series of delightful books. Reading one will make you want to read the next one. I can read them over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-01-19

I have the complete series of All Creatures Great and Small books now. This was the last one and I loved it as much as I loved the others. He was a fantastic writer and having been born and raised on a farm I can appreciate a lot of what he talks about. I also have his cat and dog stories books and loved them just as much.

5 out of 5 stars wholesome, human, beautifully written.......2007-01-04

I read the Herriot books years and years ago. I learned that my husband had not. So when he needed more "going to sleep" books that could be read in short sections and would let him fall pleasantly to sleep after a few chapters, I ordered all the "Bright and Beautiful, Wise and Wonderful" series for him. After the first bedtime with the first one, he kept it next to him all day, to read just one more chapter when he had a few minutes free. He regales me with some of the tales that I have since forgotten, so I plan to re-read these wonderful snapshots of life, location, people, and animals for myself. They are actually even more refreshing now than when they first delighted me 30 years ago.

Book Description

Celebrate the return of the most beloved storyteller of our time!

The waiting is finally over. For the first time in over a decade, the world's favorite veterinarian, James Herriot, returns us in a twinkle to the rural green enclave of England called Yorkshire for more irresistible tales of animals and people.

At long last, another treat from Herriot!

In stories of wonders great and small, James reintroduces many old friends like Mrs. Pumphrey, his partner Siegfried Farnon, and of course, his wife Helen. But there are wonderful new faces too, especially his children Rosie and Jimmy, and his latest assistant, Calum Buchanan.

Herriot works his magic again!

Offering readers an even more intimate view of the life and dreams of a country vet than any of his previous volumes, James Herriot's Every Living Thing is a book that will warm your heart, make you laugh out loud, and feel so good you'll never want it to end.

Herriot really does love Every Living Thing...and so will you!

4 out of 5 stars Every Living Thing.......2006-02-24

As usual, I enjoyed the stories written by James Herriot; maybe not quite as much as previous books but it still made very enjoyable reading!

5 out of 5 stars Funny, sad, entertaining, another Herriot Masterpiece.......2005-08-26

When I think about it, it scares me that James Herriot almost never got published. It was through a small bit of luck/fate/intuition, whatever you want to call it, that his writing was made into a book.

He has since become the most well know vet in the world (although he is now dead), and his writing has entertained people all over the world. This book, published quite a bit later than his other ones, caps off the series. Another fun 350-or-so pages of writing that will make you both sad and happy at the same time.

I highly recommend this book as well as the others in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Gently humorous.......2004-10-11

This book is the last book written by James Herriot - actually James Alfred Wight (1916-95). James, a native of Glasgow, Scotland, qualified as a veterinarian at 23 years of age, and quickly fell with his new location of Yorkshire. Beginning in 1970, James began to write books, reaching into his years of experience as a vet, and spinning out enthralling and entertaining stories of things that did happen and things that might have happened on the Yorkshire Dales.

As I said, this book was James's last, being published in 1992. In it, we read adventures of a country vet, doing battle against disease, hypochondriac pet-owners, uncooperative animals, the weather, other vets, and...just about everything. This is another great James Herriot - All Creatures book, one that I loved as much as the earlier books. If you like good storytelling, or are interested in veterinarians, then you will love this book. It is a gently humorous story that is sure to entertain all. I highly recommend it!

Rarely does a book come along that tackles a perennially difficult human issue with such clarity and intelligence. Harold Kushner, a Jewish rabbi facing his own child's fatal illness, deftly guides us through the inadequacies of the traditional answers to the problem of evil, then provides a uniquely practical and compassionate answer that has appealed to millions of readers across all religious creeds. Remarkable for its intensely relevant real-life examples and its fluid prose, this book cannot go unread by anyone who has ever been troubled by the question, "Why me?"

Book Description

As a young theology student, Harold Kushner puzzled over the Book of Job. As a small-town rabbi he counseled other people through pain and grief. But not until he learned that his three-year-old son, Aaron, would die in his early teens of a rare disease did he confront one of life's most difficult questions: Where do we find the resources to cope when tragedy strikes?

"I knew that one day I would write this book," says Rabbi Kushner. "I would write it out of my own need to put into words some of the most important things I have come to believe and know. And I would write it to help other people who might one day find themselves in a similar predicament. I am fundamentally a religious man who has been hurt by life, and I wanted to write a book that could be given to the person who has been hurt by life, and who knows in his heart that if there is justice in the world, he deserved better. . . . If you are such a person, if you want to believe in God's goodness and fairness but find it hard because of the things that have happened to you and to people you care about, and if this book helps you do that, then I will have succeeded in distilling some blessing out of Aaron's pain and tears."

Since its original publication in 1981, When Bad Things Happen to Good People has brought solace and hope to millions. In his new preface to this anniversary edition, Rabbi Kushner relates the heartwarming responses he has received over the last two decades from people who have found inspiration and comfort within these pages.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great discussion book.......2007-05-22

Kushner's book makes a great discussion starter because every person has experienced bad things happening to good people. Using his book helps one look at reactions such as anger, guilt, the forever "why" questions. I'm currently using the book as a study with a group of Christian women. It is interesting to hear them broaden Kushner's theology with their own Christian beliefs. I am using Philip Yancey's Where is God When it Hurts? to supplement When Bad Things Happen to Good People.

5 out of 5 stars The best book you can buy for dealing with loss, trials, tribulations, and a divine power!.......2007-05-10

There is no better book on the market than this one if you are searching for meaning behind the question, "Why do bad things happen to good people?" This one is simply the best. It doesn't matter what your faith is, or even if you have a faith. This book does more to help one heal from the pain and devastation of loss, trials, and tribulations than any other I've ever read....and I've read a lot. This is the one book I recommended to everyone who is going through something painful, struggling to make sense of the devastation and pain that can so often be a part of our lives. More over, even if you aren't experiencing anything of a devastating nature, this book can help you connect to the "whys" of the universe; help open your mind to explanations that actually do bring comfort. I read this book a couple of times a year, that alone can help keep me focused and hopeful, as well as renewing my sense of faith in the divine.

1 out of 5 stars Heretical Nonsense.......2007-05-09

This book twists so much about God.
God is in control of all things and has the power to change all circumstances. When he doesn't that does not change the fact that God is good and is in control. Trials are put or allowed to be in our lives for a reason. We do not always know why but if you are walking with God you can be sure that it will work out for good. Yes even if we lose someone we love or have a lifelong struggle...

1 out of 5 stars Worst self help book I have ever read.......2007-04-21

As you can tell from the title of my review, this book did not help me at all. In fact, it made me feel worse. More to the point, I thought it was poorly written. In addition to depressing the reader, the author contradicts his thesis. He pledges to tell the reader why bad things happen to good people, but instead argues that bad things happen for no reason and God has no control over it. Maybe this is helpful for people who are able to accept that that there are mysteries in life, but for someone like me who is very cerebral/logical, and finds comfort in answers, this book was not worth the money I spent on it. Perhaps Kushner should have picked a different title for his book.

Someone recommended I read this right after my mother died from colon cancer when I was 20. I bought it hoping to find some "reason" why this had happened to my family. The title of the book made me think that the author might address this point, but as mentioned above, the reality is quite the contrary. Since Kushner does not answer the questions posed in his book, he left me aching to find the answers and hating God even more which I am certain was not Kushner's goal.

For those seeking to understand how to cope with the death of a loved one, I highly recommend Learned Optimism, by Martin E.P. Selligman, Ph.D. Although no one can explain why God "allows" bad things to happen to the people we love, Selligman will help you figure out how to deal with hardships in all areas of your life much more effectively than Kushner. Take it from a licensed psychologist, not a Rabbi.

1 out of 5 stars This book makes you terribly unsecure.......2007-04-13

I have lost a child to cancer. My wife and I were looking for answers. we baught Rabbi Kushner's book. We read the book carefully. By the time my wife and I finished the book we were so broken and depressed, we felt terribly insecure. We felt that no one is in charge of the world and things happen to good people for no good reason, and that can happen easily to other good people we knew. After going thru counceling, our Pyscologist (a secularist) reffered us to a set of audio cassates and a book called "Making Sense of Suffering" ISBN: 1-57819-757-0. We read the book and listened to the lectures. Then after thinking over these new ideas and the logic that we were exposed to, we finaly got back much of our live, but it wouldn't be able to happen with Rabbi Kushner's theory.
