5 out of 5 stars Brilliance Abounds.......2000-06-20

Pablo Neruda did not live an ordinary life. Neither was his death ordinary (technically he died of internal hemmorhaging, however he was murdered after supporting the first democratically elected communist leader... chock full of scandal). The first thing his widow did after hearing of his death was running to her study and taking from his desk all the poems that lay atop it (since he was known to write at least five poems a day, they were plents). These are the poems that appear in this book... you will want to write a letter to Neruda's widow praising her for saving some of the most beautiful work that Neruda did. His lyric quality and graphic diction make this a collection of poetry you want to dedicate yourself to memorizing. The poetry buries itself in your heart and you suddenly see new beauty springing around you. A must-buy.

    Book Description

When Opus Posthumous first appeared in 1957, it was an appropriate capstone to the career of one of the most important writers of the twentieth century. It included many poems missing from Stevens's Collected Poems, along with Stevens's characteristically inventive prose and pieces for the theater. Now Milton J. Bates, the author of the acclaimed Wallace Stevens: A Mythology of Self, has edited and revised Opus Posthumous to correct the previous edition's errors and to incorporate material that has come to light since original publication. A third of the poems and essays in this edition are new to the volume. The resulting book is an invaluable literary document whose language and insights are fresh, startling, and eloquent.

                Book Description

Ogden Nash, Dave Barry, Bill Maher, Oprah Winfrey, Rudyard Kipling, and Dr. Seuss are among the myriad writers and celebrities who have inspired retired Colonel Steven Selman to put his pen to paper.

In Prehumous Unpoetic Poems, Selman shares his own unique and humorous musings on subjects to which we can all relate. The result is outrageous, irreverent poetry covering a broad range of topics from holidays to politics to religion. From the irony and cynicism of “Wall Street Secret” to the introspective quality of “Wasted Time,” Selman offers a personal and realistic view of the world around us. With a creative flair all his own, he pokes fun at everyday life and societal norms that often go unchallenged.

Prehumous Unpoetic Poems is a thoughtful, quirky observation on the ups and downs of modern life that will inspire both quiet contemplation and uproarious laughter.

“In a season of obfuscation, a distinctive, brilliant and, most important, funny voice of reason and rationality.”
—Herbert Hadad, award winning New York Times writer

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Life View.......2005-09-27

This amazing booklet is as profound as it is surprising. One encounters Ogeden-Nash-type doggerel, short poems which comment on the inanities of modern life. Upon proceeding one comes upon a cornucopia of wisdom regarding politics, war, love, art, science, religion, philosophy. This evolves into a comprehensive world view from a descendant of Jewish immigrants, personalized by the memories of his own childhood. Colonel Selman began as a psychotherapist, turned Viet Nam pilot, commanded a combat stress unit, then Chief of Human Relations, social scientist and lecturer. Biting humor abounds. This little booklet could well serve as the credo for emerging young liberals today.

5 out of 5 stars Amusing, personal and sometimes poignant .......2005-02-05

Full of fun poems an all different subjects that catch the authors mind. Usally light hearted even when dealing with serious issues.
Combines a structured rhyme scheme with semi-structured organization that remains coherent and makes the book all the more personal.
