Book Description
This widely used clinical reference and text has now been fully revised and expanded, providing the latest knowledge on culturally sensitive practice with families and individuals from over 40 different ethnic groups. Each chapter demonstrates how ethnocultural factors may influence the assumptions of both clients and therapists, the issues people bring to the clinical context, and their resources for coping and problem solving. An indispensable new appendix offers a concise guide to weaving cultural information into assessment and intervention planning.

Ethnicities and Culture.......2007-03-27
This book was suggested to me by one of my professor's who happens to teach a family counseling course. She suggested that we buy this book to use in our future practices. Since I have purchased the book, I have already referred to it twice. It is highly detailed and knowledgable. I was able to use if for a presentation and for a resource on a college exit exam. I highly recommend this book to those who seek further knowledge and information on various cultures. It reviews all nationalities and cultures that exist in today's society.
Ethnicity and Family Therapy, Third Edition.......2007-01-09
This is an extremely valuable and important resource for clinicians. It provides cultural overviews that can be used in clinical work and teaching. It is a wonderful desktop resource that can facilitate the essential process of cultural consideration in clinical work with families. Monica McGoldrick's writing is clear and enjoyable.
Excellent read.......2007-01-09
OK, this book wouldn't seem especially fun to read, and I'll admit that a counselor friend had to recommend it to me, but I find it simply fascinating. As I read through the chapters about my family's heritage, I really found it compelling that many of the the behaviors and values that I take for granted are not simply from my family, but are in large measure common to my ethnicity. Then, as I read about the heritage of my fiancee's family, it really put things into perspective for me. Behaviors that I might have found rude or offensive in my cultural framework have a perfectly natural, and honorable, root in thiers. If understanding is the key to acceptance, this book really helped me understand and communicate much better, and begin to accept and live within different cultures. This book gives an excellent framework to explain how different ethnicitys come to value different things. Highly recommended.
A great way to expand cultural knowledge.......2006-11-10
This is a wonderful and easy to read book that attempts to educate the reader about the culture and divesity of various ethnic groups. The book is divided into racial categories, which are subdivided into specific countries to give the reader a flavor of the diversity within these groups. Anyone who works with ethnic minorities should read this book to get a general sense of how cultural similarities and differences within racial and cultural categories impact family dynamics, the theraputic experience, and adjustment into the American culture.
Very Relevant.......2006-08-07
This is a great book for finding out how to bring people of differing race to an understanding. For instance, I remember one example where White students, approximately between the ages of thirteen and sixteen, were, as part of a therapeutic course, required to refer to all Black people in their environment as 'sir'.This simple sign of respect was a great way to dismantle racism.

there must be better Family therapy books!.......2007-04-24
I hated this book. It was a required text for a graduate level Intro to Family Therapy course, and although I appreciate that graduate level coursebooks are supposed to require the ability to decipher complicated language, this book was boring and uninteresting to a fault.
Don't buy it, and show your prof's this comment! There HAVE to be better written texts out there -- somewhere!
Cram Scam.......2007-01-10
What a waste of time and $$. This book is basically a list of the vocabulary words with empty pages for notes. The front cover states 'includes all of the highlights, outlines, and notes for the textbook' - that's true if your version of notetaking and outlining is copying the keywords and their definitions. There are no graphics, webs, tables, charts, or any kind of visual or organizational material. There is an online membership offered that includes practice tests, but it is $4.95 extra, regularly $9.95. Don't waste your time or money - buy the textbook and use their resources.
A Gem Amongst Psych Texts.......2006-02-07
Thus far this book has been easy to read and informative, detailing the incredibly useful theories and principles of Family Therapy.
This being my first text on the subject has kindled an interest in me to continue pusuing the subject in depth, and I recoomend this text as a canon text in the specialty of Introductory Family Therapy.
Family Therapy An (Humdrum) Overview.......2005-08-04
This text is very dry reading. As a student, I had to force myself to read by promising myself rewards every ten pages (yes! I can go get a drink! Then ten more pages and then yes! I can call my mom!) And I am interested in the subject, and love to read. The information is good, detailed, etc. but the method is dry. In comparison, my counseling theories text was easy to read, informative, and interesting, and it didn't take self positive reinforcing to get me to read the whole thing.

Customer Reviews:
Really Good... as far as it goes, but the editorializing is odd.......2007-06-01
What I like: There's very little of significance in the field that Nichols and Schwartz have failed to include in the series of seven editions, and they're so deep in the trenches and so well-connected to the ground-breakers that each new edition will pretty reliably cover the latest developments, techniques and empirical research. It's hard to think of anyone else who's doing as -thorough- a job of grounding newcomers as these guys. That said...
What I don't like: The authors seem to have -some- continuing biases against proven philosophy, method and empirical data from the medical model, existential, interpersonal (this really -is- surprising) and other schools of thought and practice that make me continue to scratch my scalp when I run into them. Also... I get further, -faster-, with the Karpman Drama Triangle than almost any other tool I have in the box... and this series has ignored it since the git.
Useful Book.......2006-06-20
I purchased this book for a graduate level course in family therapy. I found it very helpful in explaining the important theories of family therapy. It also highlights therapeutic techniques and provides vignettes of how the theory might apply in a real life situation. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a basic theoretical background in family therapy.
Required text book.......2006-03-10
I bought this book because it is a requirement for a graduate level class I am taking in the MSW program where I live, otherwise I don't know that I would have purchased it. However, it is full of good research information and practical applications with clients.
Student review.......2006-01-05
As a graduate student, I found this book very helpful. It is a perfect introduction to the subject writen with the care that teaches well. I would recommend this for any library that needs an excellent broad overview.
Great Text book.......2005-10-04
This book provides a wealth of information regarding Family therapy from the influences that lead toward the family therapy movement. Also key figures in the family therapy.

Book Description
For the 70 percent of couples who have been affected by extramarital affairs, this is the only book to offer proven strategies for surviving the crisis and rebuilding the relationship -- written by a nationally known therapist considered an expert on infidelity.
When I was 15, I was raped. That was nothing compared to your affair. The rapist was a stranger; you, I thought, were my best friend.
There is nothing quite like the pain and shock caused when a partner has been unfaithful. The hurt partner often experiences a profound loss of self-respect and falls into a depression that can last for years. For the relationship, infidelity is often a death blow.
After the Affair is the first book to help readers survive this crisis. Written by a clinical psychologist who has been treating distressed couples for 22 years, it guides both hurt and unfaithful partners through the three stages of healing: Normalizing feelings, deciding whether to recommit and revitalizing the relationship. It provides proven, practical advice to help the couple change their behavior toward each other, cultivate trust and forgiveness and build a healthier, more conscious intimate partnership.
Customer Reviews:
Encouraging thoughts for affairs.......2007-05-26
This helped me through a rough time, now trying to get my husband to read it since he was responsible for the affair in the first place. Although there is no hope for my marraige, there could be for yours!
Excellent Resource for Surviving and Growing after Infidelity.......2007-05-23
After the Affair is a comprehensive and insightful manual that has provided extraordinary help in my life and Im sure will help millions. It helped me to get through the crisis and shock after finding out that my partner was having an affair. It explained the "normal" feelings and helped me to gain insight into what i was going through. After an affair there are of course choices you have. You can stay with your partner and make a committment to working on the relationship or you can move on to the new adventure that awaits you. This time in your life can be truly transformative. This book offers practical information on rebuilding trust if you choose that path. Personally I got a lot out of the book but I chose to move on with my life. The answer lies within your heart. You just need to listen closely. Highly recommended reading for anyone dealing with this challenging situation.
Not my favorite.......2007-05-13
I was not impressed by the advice in this book.I think no two affairs are the same, neither are all waywards or all betrayed spouses. Her approach seemed to be very one size fits all.Maybe it will help some people but it doesn't help all.The old adage of bad marriage=affair needs to be looked at again.Sometimes there are seriously messed up people that have affairs and fixing the 'broken marriage' will NOT fix them.
Good Stuff.......2007-03-09
This book was suggested by my couples therapist. I admire the view form both sides. You can read how the offender felt and how the victim felt. This is a non-judgemental book and is helping our relationship immenseley.
Best on the topic.......2007-02-28
I've read a lot of books on this topic, and this was the most helpful by far. I also strongly recommend the author's other book "How Can I Forgive You," which addresses forgiveness issues in a lot of relationship contexts, not just marital infidelity.

Book Description
First comes love. Then comes marriage. Then comes....a baby carriage? Isnt that what all women want? Not so for Claudia Parr. And just as she gives up on finding a man who feels the same way, she meets warm, wonderful Ben. Things seem too good to be true when they fall in love and agree to buck tradition with a satisfying, child-free marriage. Then the unexpected occurs: one of them has a change of heart. One of them wants children after all. This is the witty, heartfelt story about what happens to the perfect couple when they suddenly want different things. Its about feeling that your life is set and then realizing that nothing is as you thought it was--and that there is no possible compromise. Its about deciding what is most important in life, and taking chances to get it. But most of all, its about the things we will do--and wont do--for love.
Customer Reviews:
Didn't meet my expectations.......2007-07-02
I read her two other books and loved them, so I may have had very high expectations about this one. She is a very good writer, but the story just wasn't that great. Bring back Darcy and Rachel!
Not so much :(.......2007-07-01
I dont know what it was about this book, but i just didnt enjoy it as much as something blue or something borrowed. The story just seemed slow and stupid, but the ending was sweet and happy of course. The book was just so typical...but i definitely recommend something borrowed and something blue..i think the characters in those books are more developed and the characters are more heartywarming and hilarious.
Unexpectedly great.......2007-06-28
I admit that when I first bought this book, I did not expect much from it. I had heard of the author and that she was a good writer, but I am ashamed to say that I could not get past the pastel cover. I picked this up thinking it would be a simple toss away beach read and some mindless entertainment.
How wrong I was! It is very much an entertaining book, with a light and humorous touch. But it also explores the issues of motherhood and babies very intelligently and the author does a masterful job of exploring the nuances in each character's particular viewpoint. Emotions are explored in ways that are not just simply black and white and the story comes across very naturally as a result.
I hope that anyone else who like me might be hesitant to buy this book because of superficial notions that it is fluff will reconsider. It is much better than that.
Good Book!.......2007-06-27
I could not wait for this book to come out because I loved the first two books - "Something Borrowed" and "Something Blue". This book was not as good as the first two although I did enjoy it. I guess I was expecting a little more out of the author. I still would recommend this book to people who enjoy Emily Giffin.
Another good one!.......2007-06-27
I have enjoyed all 3 of Emily Giffin's books! This new one was no exception.

Book Description
Men are right. The “relationship talk” does not help. Dr. Patricia Love’s and
Dr. Steven Stosny’s How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It
reveals the stunning truth about marital happiness:
Love is not about better communication.
It's about connection.
You'll never get a closer relationship
with your man by talking to him like you
talk to one of your girlfriends.
Male emotions are like women's sexuality:
you can't be too direct too quickly.
There are four ways to connect with a man:touch, activity, sex, routines.
Men want closer marriages just as much as women do,but not if they has to act like a woman.
Talking makes women move closer;
it makes men move away.
The secret of the silent male is this:
his wife supplies the meaning in his life.
The stunning truth about love is that talking doesn’t help.
Have you ever had this conversation with your spouse?
Wife: “Honey, we need to talk about us.”
Husband: “Do we have to?”
Drs. Patricia Love and Steven Stosny have studied this all-too-familiar dynamic between men and women and have reached a truly shocking conclusion. Even with the best of intentions, talking about your relationship doesn’t bring you together, and it will eventually drive you apart.
The reason for this is that underneath most couples’ fights, there is a biological difference at work. A woman’s vulnerability to fear and anxiety makes her draw closer, while a man’s subtle sensitivity to shame makes him pull away in response. This is why so many married couples fall into the archetypal roles of nagging wife/stonewalling husband, and why improving a marriage can’t happen through words.
How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It teaches couples how to get closer in ways that don’t require “trying to turn a man into a woman.” Rich in stories of couples who have turned their marriages around, and full of practical advice about the behaviors that make and break marriages, this essential guide will help couples find love beyond words.

Helpful Facts.......2007-06-27
As someone who is usually in some spiritual conversation about marriage and relationships, this book has been so helpful. The concrete differences between the sexes are important to know and not try to fix. The second half of the book starts out with compassion being the answer. It is the only answer.
I Love It. I gave it away and have to buy a new copy for myself

Very helpful book, also well-written.......2007-05-13
This book is very well-written and is very helpful for couples working on making their marriage better. Like all marriage books, there are some generalizations in this book, but overall the ideas expressed in this book are backed by research and the experience of the authors.
As a student completing his dual masters in marriage and family therapy and mental health counseling, and also as a husband, I found the book helpful and useful and it rang true for me in many ways. My wife also enjoyed the book as well, and found it mostly accurate and helpful.
A MUST READ.......2007-05-08
As a professional Psychotherapist I am recommending this book to all my clients. It reads easily, has very important data, and good humor through out. It helps to take a step further in the understanding that we are different creatures in gender and to get this so that we may move onto real relationship. I highly recommend it for all who dare to be in relationship and do their personal work! My husband loves it too!

Built from Scratch is about two businessmen who achieve the American Dream by fundamentally changing the realm of home-improvement retailing. Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank, cofounders of the Home Depot, explain how they established the first national chain in the industry by concentrating on low prices, customer service, and strong leadership values.
Ultimately, this is a book about grit and determination. "Building the Home Depot was a tough, uphill battle from the day we started," they write. "No one believed we could do it and very few people trusted our judgment." The two cofounders launched the company only after they were fired by a California hardware retailer because of politics. The Home Depot lost $1 million in its first year of operation in Atlanta. Today it's one of the great successes on Wall Street, with more than 700 stores across the country and 160,000 employees.
One reason the book is so engaging is that it includes corporate anecdotes. A favorite: the company banned wild parties after several employees were demoted and a couple were fired in the wake of a drunken annual managers' meeting. Another yarn involves Sears, which made one of the worst financial mistakes in retailing history when it passed on a deal to purchase Home Depot in the early 1980s. The authors are self-serving at times; for example, they whine too much about paying $104.5 million to dispose of a sex-discrimination lawsuit. But there's no denying the smashing performance of Big Orange. Marcus and Blank paint a story with some sparkling advice for practically anyone in business. --Dan Ring
Book Description
One of the greatest entrepreneurial success stories of the past twenty years
When a friend told Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank that "you've just been hit in the ass by a golden horseshoe," they thought he was crazy. After all, both had just been fired. What the friend, Ken Langone, meant was that they now had the opportunity to create the kind of wide-open warehouse store that would help spark a consumer revolution through low prices, excellent customer service, and wide availability of products.
Built from Scratch is the story of how two incredibly determined and creative people--and their associates--built a business from nothing to 761 stores and $30 billion in sales in a mere twenty years.
Built from Scratch tells many colorful stories associated with The Home Depot's founding and meteoric rise; shows that a company can be a tough, growth-oriented competitor and still maintain a high sense of responsibility to the community; and provides great lessons useful to people in any business, from start-ups to the Fortune 500.
Great Stories
"Ming the Merciless": The inside account of the man who fired Arthur Blank and Bernie Marcus
"My people don't drive Cadillacs!" How Ross Perot almost got involved with The Home Depot
"Take this job and shove it!" The banker who put his career on the line to get The Home Depot the loan that enabled it to survive
"Folks, I tell ya, if these Atlanta stores were any bigger, we'd be paying Alabama sales tax." Home Depot's first good ol' southern advertising campaign
A Company with a Conscience
When disasters like the Oklahoma City bombing or Hurricane Andrew happen, Home Depot associates don't ask for permission to respond. They react from their hearts--whether that means keeping their store open all night or being on the scene with volunteers and relief supplies.
The Home Depot doesn't just contribute money to organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Christmas in April, but also provides its people to help lead and grow these community efforts.
Great Lessons
Know your customer: In The Home Depot's case, customers don't pay for wider aisles and a pretty store, but for a wide assortment and low prices
Why everyday low prices mean more sales overall: The marketing philosophy The Home Depot learned from talking with Sam Walton
Market leadership: Why The Home Depot never goes to a major new market with plans to open just a few stores
The strategy for profitable growth: How The Home Depot redefined its U.S. market from its $135 billion traditional "do-it-yourself" base to a much larger pond of $365 billion
How to change the rules of the game: How The Home Depot bypassed almost all middlemen, allowing it to pass on huge savings to customers
Built from Scratch is the firsthand account of how two regular guys created one of the greatest entrepreneurial successes of the last twenty years.
Opening the First Store
"What the hell happened? Who screwed up the store? . . . Whatever time remained before the doors were scheduled to open for the first time, we sped around in forklifts, stomping on the brakes, scuffing up the flooring so it would once more look like a warehouse."
Customer Service
"If ever I saw an associate point a customer toward what they needed three aisles over, I would threaten to bite their finger. I would say, 'Don't ever let me see you point. You take the customer by the hand, and you bring them right where they need to be and you help them.'"
Giving Back
"When The Home Depot went public we realized that we had the financial capacity and wherewithal to give back to the communities where we did business. There is a concept in Judaism called tzedaka, which means 'to give back.' It is considered a mitzvah, a good deed, to give to someone who doesn't have, and we believe strongly in giving back to the community."
Selling the Vision
"We had to be psychologists, lovers, romancers, and con artists to get vendors aboard. Our ability to paint a picture of how that would take place--lowest prices, widest selection, and great customer service--was what convinced skeptical manufacturers to sell merchandise to us during the early years."
The Importance of Values
"I have never had anybody work for me in retailing who didn't work for me out of love, as opposed to fear. We carried this approach into building The Home Depot. We care about each other and we care about the customer. The things that we do for customers inside and outside the stores demonstrate our commitment to them. And then when something happens within the company, we circle the wagons. We help each other."

The INDISPENSIBLE history of building a business from one store with zero sales to a $100 BILLION company. .......2007-01-18
It never ceases to amaze me in what it takes to satisfy a reader. When I read a book like this, I am basically asking myself several questions. How on earth did these guys do it? How did they come through the funnel and get it done. What was at stake? What were the major premises of the concept? Could it have failed, if so how? How close did it come to failing? Could some one else have done this, or replicated it, or perhaps have done it better.
A lot of life is pure fantasy. You have your own template of how things works, and you look at the world and you see that template everywhere. If you go out and try to apply this system and superimpose it onto the real world, it either fails or it succeeds. Sometimes the template is a good one, but the execution gets screwed up.
When I look at Home Depot, a story that I have an intimacy with, I found this particular book to be fabulous. There is nothing boring about it; in fact I found every page worthwhile. Having spent 35 years in Wall Street running money, and figuring out how does a company make a buck, I found this book even more worthwhile. If you are involved in the investment business, this becomes a particularly worthwhile read.
If you run a company or have aspirations towards a career in management, you better read this book, because there is something in it for everyone. For most of us, there is more than one thing in it. Peter Drucker the ultimate management mind of the 20th century probably said it best when he talked about the corporation as a living, breathing organism that required nourishment on a daily basis. You just can't assume that corporations will continue to exist simply because they exist now.
Every day a company fights for its corporate life, for its right to continue to exist. Those corporate entities that assume that they will always be around - NEVER LAST. Other entities out there either eat them up, or they suffer the slow final death of arrogance, and go out of business without even knowing why they went out.
Home Depot is the story of two guys that got up in the morning every morning, fighting for the right to keep doing it a better way. They lived by the credo that you have to keep moving or they will throw dirt on you. Some of the lessons and ideas you will learn from this book include the following:
· CUSTOMER SERVICE - You have to take care of good people, and constantly be on the lookout for them. If necessary hire them, even when you don't have the jobs for them because you may not get a second shot at them.
· DOING THE RIGHT THING ALL THE TIME - It can cost you money doing the right thing, but it comes back in spades. Something else happens when you do the right thing. People realize your efforts, and some will take advantage of you, but that will be more than offset by the multitude of others who will become loyal customers for life.
· NOBODY LOVES A COMPANY- They may love what you do, and what you do for them as customers, but there is no real loyalty to companies, at least in this generation. Home Depot always tried to make as many of their employees stockholders as possible, so that they could align the employee (associates at HD) goals with the corporate goals.
· THIS IS A TOUGH PLACE TO WORK IF YOU ARE INFLEXIBLE - This lesson was lost on the current Chairman, CEO Nardelli who was fired by the Board for his IMPERIAL management style. He also possessed no understanding of the Home Depot culture as he tried to superimpose his General Electric template on the company. He failed miserably but that's another book.
· IF YOU CAN SAVE THE CUSTOMER MONEY, DO IT - Always do the right thing by the customer, and you will have a customer for life. Go the extra mile for the customer. CULTIVATE the customer.
· THE FOUNDERS WERE LIVING ON THE FUMES OF DREAMS - I loved these stories. These guys Marcus and Blank were honest about what they faced, and several times this company was touching or facing bankruptcy. This is an important lesson. The way around it is to have twice as much capital as you think you need. This by itself was worth reading the entire book. This is priceless knowledge.
· IT'S ABOUT PRICE, SELECTION, AND CUSTOMER SERVICE - Never lose sight of this statement and act on it in your own business goals. Give people the best price you can, and the finest selection of merchandise. If you back it up with the industry's best customer service you have found for yourself a business model for success. It may sound simple, but try executing on it.
So let me let you in on a secret. I spent years with Bear Stearns well over 20 years ago as a limited partner. When I read the early financial stories of Home Depot on Wall Street, I knew that what the founders in this book were saying was the complete unvarnished truth.
The story of how Ross Perot, one of America's wealthiest men in the early 1980's blew having dominant control of this company is now the stuff of myths. Nevertheless it's a true story. The founders ultimately turned down Ross Perot as a shareholder. They believe Perot to be a control freak. Yes, Perot didn't want the founders driving around in a Cadillac. Perot was a Chevy man. Well, the Chevy man blew a $60 billion dollar fortune by not investing a couple of million in Home Depot.
Then there's Ken Langone, the financial guy behind this phenomenal story. Langone may be the only guy in America to be the IPO maven behind two all time American success stories. He successfully brought public both Ross Perot's EDS, and the Home Depot. Who else can say that? He also made a billion dollars in the process. Langone is a unique, fabulous, walk to the well with you kind of guy. Among Wall Street types, he is unique, and the Street needs many more like him.
There is a story in the book where Langone is involved in a stock sale to a very nasty executive who is very prominent in his own right. Every time the executive refuses to give in to Langone's price, Langone just keeps upping the ante on him. This goes on for pages. It is uproariously funny, and is deserving of retelling over and over again. You will love this book, and learn an enormous amount about business in the process. It should probably be required reading for all MBA programs in management.
If you have any desire to understand what it takes to dedicate your entire life to building something, especially in the business world than this book is a read for you. There's one more thing that I must get across that is compelling. Having spent my life involved with companies like Home Depot, and high-powered successful people, I have come to the conclusion that it does not have to work out successfully.
There is no such thing as one must succeed, or it was ordained that this must happen. As an example Home Depot could have gone out of business a half dozen times before becoming so financially solvent that the business model had to work.
Steve Jobs at Apple could have decided 20 years ago, to license that Apple operating system to the PC industry, and Gates and Microsoft would never have happened. GM could have decided to build quality cars 25 years ago, instead of building [...]for decades while the Japanese took the market away.
Al Gore could have concentrated just a little bit more on Florida in 2000, and George W. Bush would have never been. John Kerry could have fought off the challenge of the Swift Boat accusations, and Ohio would have gone his way, and with it the election.
In the end, it's really a question of who comes through the funnel, and that is not always predictable. As I read this wonderful book, I came to the conclusion once again, that yes, you have to go for it, and dedicate all to getting there, but there is no certitude that you are going to make it. Just make sure you follow YOUR PASSION, because no matter where you wind up, a PASSION FILLED LIFE is a life WORTH LIVING. Good luck.

Home Depot provides a horrible experience.......2006-12-29
If you like wandering around with no service, ringing yourself out at the register, and watching a bunch of orange outfits ignore you, try Home Depot. The bigger the company gets, the more horrible the experience. Try True Hardware.
I'm rich. I started a company. I wrote a book........2004-08-24
What a laugh. Yes you!!! The average American with your wealthy silent investor in your pocket. You too can open a store.
Home Depot has spent a good deal of money trying to improve its image; including writing these books. HD has serious problems with women suing them.If you tell the customer that you are serving them well, and beat them over the head that they are receiving top notch lip service, then eventually some will believe it.
HD has spent millions improving their stores by widening ailses and better lighting. They claim to be industry leaders yet can't seem to shake Lowes from opening stores all around HD stores and even in HD's home Atlanta market.
They are very aggressive and drive their employees to bring shareholder value. They do offer products for less and have had great financial backing.
They also control costs by "Rifting" which means they fire people that start earning enough money that it becomes cheaper to train someone else.
Its one thing to write a book to laud yourself. Why not write about all the dirty tricks you pulled to get there.
Full of Lies.......2003-10-03
Let's face facts: home depot is known for abysmal service and really, really shoddy haphazard installations. They probably spend more on defending lawsuits than on store development. This book makes them look like such wizards, such brilliant and benevelont businessmen, when in fact they have done studies to see what the minimum level of customer service they can get away with is - and then tried to stretch that envelope.
I am sure Ken Lay could write books full of accolades to Enron. It would be just as true, and just as much a waste of time and money to read.
A great story..........2003-09-07
and very well told, which really makes this book a fast read (I had a hard time putting it down).
Provides, IMO, valuable information that will be useful for any business owner. I am glad these guys took the time to share their story, and I hope I get to meet them one day.
What a great way to spend a rainy weekend. You'll love it as it reads like a novel. And you'll never look at Home Depot the same way.

HOPE GIVER.......2007-05-26
This book was recomened by a wonderful Christian Doctor that I work for. He knew my son was going thru a critical time with his wife and offered to purchase this book for him. I got online and ordered one that night. When it arrived it was the first time my son really got excited about the fact that his marraige could be saved. We orderd another one of the books and had it sent to his wife. Truthfully there are not enough books or people that encourage a person to work hard at saving your marraige. Most will tell you to move on. True, saving a marriage is hard, hard, hard work, but this book helps you see it can be done and there are people out there who are willing to help you achive this goal. People with serious marraige problems have a hugh feeling of failure, and feel the only way to succeed is to move on and divorce. This book helps you see that being successful is finding the strenght and support and making your marriage work again!!!!
This book was the start of saving my relationship.......2007-05-19
There was a point in my relationship where I didn't know what to do, it was near over. A friend recommended reading this book and I got it right away. There are so many proactive suggestions that you can use that actually work. Of course, this isn't the only thing that did save my relationship, but it sure got me onto a great start. I now recommend my friends who are having difficulties to get this book. It's permanent in my personal library.
Good book.......2007-05-08
I felt she did a good job writing this book. I think some will benefit, but I found it to be a little too one size fits all for me. I suggest looking into it before buying it.
Read this book before filing for divorce.......2007-04-18
It is not always possible to prevent a divorce, no matter how much one partner wants to save the marriage. Divorce can be traumatic and life altering, especially to the partner who does not want the marriage to end.
I feel that couples should go to marriage counseling and read this book before filing for divorce, if at all possible. It may not save your marriage, but at least you know you did everything in your power to make your marriage work. Many couples simply give up too soon, not fully understanding the ramifications of divorce.

it is not easy to fix something that is broken, but that is just what this book has helped me do-fix my marriage. it has not been easy, but this book has provided me with a wealth of information, tools, and the confidence, to get back on track. it will not just come to you-it takes work and effort-but it can happen. i have several other of the michelle weiner davis books and i find them to be well written, and not at all vague or hard to understand-just open and honest and sensitive to both parties/spouses. i highly reccomend this book as well as her other titles.

Book Description
Why does great sex so often fade for couples who claim to love each other as much as ever?
Can we want what we already have?
Why does the transition to parenthood so often spell erotic disaster?
Does good intimacy always make for good sex?
Ether Perel takes on these tough questions, grappling with the obstacles and anxieties that arise when our quest for secure love conflicts with our pursuit of passion. She invites us to explore the paradoxical union of domesticity and sexual desire, and explains what it takes to bring lust home.
In her twenty years of clinical experience, Perel has treated hundreds of couples whose home lives are empty of passion. They describe relationships that are open and loving, yet sexually dull. What is going on?
In this explosively original book, Perel explains that our cultural penchant for equality, togetherness, and absolute candor is antithetical to erotic desire for both men and women. Sexual excitement doesn't always play by the rules of good citizenship. It is politically incorrect. It thrives on power plays, unfair advantages, and the space between self and other. More exciting, playful, even poetic sex is possible, but first we must kick egalitarian ideals and emotional housekeeping out of our bedrooms.
While Mating in Captivity shows why the domestic realm can feel like a cage, Perel's take on bedroom dynamics promises to liberate, enchant, and provoke. Flinging the doors open on erotic life and domesticity, she invites us to put the "X" back in sex.

Some interesting perspectives on relationships.......2007-05-06
This book breaks from the traditional "better emotional intimacy means better sex" and really tries to understand what prevents couples from having satisfying sexual relationships. One new perspective is that of how fidelity or lack thereof affects a couple's sex life. Definitely an interesting, thougt-provoking read.
A must read.......2007-04-02
If you have experienced break downs in relationships that were important to you then read this book. Having been married three times as well as in two de-facto relationships I thought I knew what was happening and blamed my personality characteristics for a lot of the failures. This book enabled me to see what was going on in a completely different light. It is clear, full of interesting cases and examples and very well researched. I am now in yet another important relationship, perhaps the most important of all and believe I am handling things much better. Sure its not easy but this book helps guide my efforts and understand my feelings in a very positive way. Thank you esther!!!
Disappointed.......2007-04-01
The book I ordered and paid for did not arrive. I am very disappointed as I will now have to find the book here in Australia and also pay bank charges twice for foreign currency used in both of the transactions i.e. the original payment, and the credit. I will be out of pocket as a consequence.
Bored in Bedroom?- No More!!.......2007-01-23
What a terrific insight into the causes and solutions to the common problem of decreased sexual activity in long-term relationships. How refreshing it is to know why this happens and that all hope is not lost! Ms. Perel gives illustrations through her patients' experiences and offers solutions as to how the erotic can be brought back to our lives- even after MANY years together. HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is looking for that spice of the "dating" days!
LONG AWAITED BOOK and well worth it!.......2006-12-08
I have followed Dr. Perel's work for a while now. She speaks the truth about sex between partners in committed relationships. Gay men have known for a long time this truth; fantasy play and a healthy understanding of honoring each other's sexual interests and differences works! She includes both gay and straight couples. Thank you Dr. Perel!!!

Book Description
On May 16, 2002, Phil and Susan Ershler reached the
top of Mt. Everest and became the first couple in history
to scale the fabled Seven Summits. What made
their achievement all the more remarkable was that Susan
was not a mountain climber, but a high-powered
Fortune ® 500 executive who had never hiked or climbed
until she met Phil at the age of 36. Phil, a professional
mountain guide who was the first American to summit
Everest from its treacherous north face, had climbed his
whole life with Crohn's disease, a chronic, debilitating
illness. Adding to these challenges, just before their final
summit, Phil was diagnosed with colon cancer, and the
resulting surgeries and complications were expected to
end his career. This is Susan and Phil's story: a tale of
love set in the mountains, a story of triumphal highs
and devastating lows in quest of a seemingly impossible
dream.

If you want to be inspired, buy this book! .......2007-06-11
I read "Together on Top of the World" in 2 nights - I just could not put it down! Incredible story! The best book that I have read in a while and I'm a voracious reader. Certainly one of the best mountaineering books I have ever read, in part, because it is not just another mountaineering book. It deals realistically and holistically with the lives of two inspirational people - their individual histories, their partnership and love. It's about adventure, highs and lows, overcoming life's seeming insurmountable hurdles, success, vision, goals and dreams. Very motivational! This book has got it all!
A Great Story of Mountains and Love.......2007-06-07
Sue and Phil have created a wonderful tale of mountains, challenges and love. Phil one of the greatest guides in the world and guides people up the worlds great mountains. Sue, shortly after meeting Phil catches the mountain bug and sets the goal of climbing the Seven Summits. While you might think he does all the work, Sue ends up inspiring and encouraging Phil as he battles a life long sickness. You will love the great story.
Not just a climbing story........2007-06-07
This book touches all lives not just climbers. It touched all my senses. I laughed, cried, smiled and got angy. I felt like I could relate to it from my own life, of course on a different level. In the end it is a "feel good" story. Even my 84 year old mother loved it!
An inspiration..........2007-05-18
An inspiring story about love, humility, grace, courage ... and mountaineering. Dreams and adversity are a part of living; Phil and Susan show you how to live.
Great story!.......2007-05-13
