"Don't try to follow the trail child,/ My woods get dark"-- from Four Nails by Gaylord Brewer.
Brewer does not write about chickens beside red wheelbarrows, glistening in the sun, unless of course the chickens are the disembodied souls we met ten years ago and the red wheelbarrows represent a sense of empty, hollow longing that mortal men were never meant to know. The poems of Gaylord Brewer are by no means light, happy verse to make you smile and say 'gee, that's nice'-- his poems cut to the bone, chiseling away what little flesh we have left after his "Presently a Beast" and "Devilfish" and sawing his way into our core. There is no sugar coating on these poems; if anything, Brewer has sprayed them with bitter apple to make them harder to swallow, so that we'll REALLY feel it and remember what he's done to us.
Brewer's poems in "Four Nails" will crucify you, but you'll relish every phrase and thrust of the hammer onto the spike. With verses like "Neither brother/ carries a stone in his chest/ nor do veins rattle/ with reptillian blood/ warming for movement" and "The second act, the dominion of the ghosts/ killed my play" you really can't go wrong. In short, Four Nails is a small treasure that any lover of contemporary poetry, avant garde writing, or coarse reality will most certainly appreciate.
These poems are your one way ticket to the dark side of the moon.
