4 out of 5 stars Professional, practical guidence on SEO and SEM.......2007-05-30

While I think that search engine marketing is a moving target and it's best to read current articles and journals, this book provides a great foundation for people interested in pursuing or understanding internet marketing, search marketing, or search engine optimization. It provides practical guidance and advice on what to do now but also works as a higher level strategic plan as well. It's written by IBMers, so there is definitely a level of professionalism compared to hackers or other non-corporate authors. Good book to add to your library, as I reference it from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for anybody in the web space.......2007-05-23

I would argue that this is perhaps the finest, most concise guide to Search Engine Marketing. Developers, Marketers, CopyWriters, Managers and just about anybody else with a stake in search traffic through a website should find this material valuable. Do not expect code, expect sound advice on how to tailor your code. Do not expect copy, expect sound advice on how to focus your copy. After putting into practice what I learned form this book, I saw immediate and impactful results.

The book is also very current and is very ethical. Do not hesitate in making a decision to purchase this book. The payoff will be swift.

4 out of 5 stars A very, very, very comprehensive resource.......2007-05-16

I purchased this book hoping to learn something new. What I found was an ABUNDANCE of information.

This book literally takes you from "zero to hero"..... it begins with extremely basic information and moves on from there.

If you're well schooled in the basics of SEO (such as "search engines can't read text inside of an image file") then you may want to skip the first few chapters.

If, however, you're new to the whole web game and need a thorough and complete education on the subject, this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Dense, complete, recommended with a caution.......2007-05-07

If anything, a bit too dense. A lot of it was aimed at medium to large size businesses with big retail sites to build/maintain. If you are like me, a small business guy, there must be something that covers what you need to know in 100 pages and skips the 350 you don't.

5 out of 5 stars Bible for Search Engine Marketing.......2007-02-11

This book is the best investment I ever made in a book. It starts with telling you to keep `conversion' in mind to put you in the right path, then it explains how search engine spiders work and therefore why and what you should and should not do, then gives you the step-by-step how-to-do it guide. Namely, it gives you two things: a solid foundation and concept, and practical implementation tools to get you succeed.

I signed up Yahoo! Directories as the book suggested. At first I thought to myself, "what the book said seems to be right. It would be good to do it, but maybe it doesn't make too much difference. But since the book said it, maybe I just tried." However, I saw tremendous improvement on my site traffic within one month I signed up Yahoo! Directories.

I was so happy that I marked many sentences to make sure I do everything the book suggested. Every word in the book is a goldmine (and will transform to real gold after you implement it.) I like the way the author tells you why each time it tells you what to do. It gives you confidence that you are in the right track. I also appreciate the beauty of the flow and organization of the book. Every paragraph is impeccably linked and integrated and it all comes down to conversion, conversion, conversion. It is not a do this do that and get rank high quick book. It arms you with the knowledge that will go a long way - even the algorithm changes everyday. I believe this book will eventually be recognized as a timeless classic in search engine marketing.

Perry Marshal provides a few insites that are worthwhile but the book comes off as being one big ad for more Perry Marshal products and services. I am always nervous when accepting advice from someone that has something to gain from my actions.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Internet Lead Generation Reference.......2007-06-25

I speak around the world on lead generation and marketing strategy. Perry and Brian did an outstanding job crafting "Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords" to give you a roadmap on how to master Adwords.

There is no other resource I can think of where you can "easily perfect" your off-line marketing strategy than using Google Adwords.

Perry and Brian give you step-by-step plan that anyone can follow in their quest to excel at marketing their products or services on-line or off-line using Google Adwords.

1 out of 5 stars Something to think about.........2007-06-24

If 100,000 people bought the book, that will make them 100,000 competitors going against you in your google ad campaign. Don't waste your time on this book, there is no free meal in any type of marketing. This book is mearly a guideline of how to, which all the information can be found on google ad page. Giant online retailers such as eBay, Amazon, and etc. has already won the bid and paying big $$$ for keywords on almost all types of consumer products. You might win the bid for $.02 keyword for niche key word like "Chocolatecoveredroach"

2 out of 5 stars Hmmm . . ........2007-06-11

Too many "it's a must" and exclamation points for me to belive all of these 5 star reviews are for real. The one 1-star review I saw seems to be the only one that says anything, and is the most convincing to me.

5 out of 5 stars Perry's Adwords Guide is the bible of this subject.......2007-06-08

There are certain people that become synonymous with a topic
and for Google Adwords, that is Perry Marshall.

Unlike when you dabble with getting Adsense to work, if you
dabble with Adwords, it can cost you thousands of dollars.

Again I had attempted Adwords before reading Perry's book hoping that
the help and internet searches would provide the answers, but
not only was it a time waster, but it cost me thousands. After
this I needed a real answer to recoup what I had lost in my
lame attempts to capture every type of visitor I could versus
Perry's approach of direct target a very specific niche and keyword.

I was taught completely different in the early days, and carried
this with me at a huge loss. Now, not only do I not touch
Adsense without referring to Perry's book, but I have also
joined his programs and clubs to make sure that I remain
on top of this topic, because if you don't, it costs you.

It is the industry standard on this topic, what he outlines in extreme
details works, and he has programs and products that support
and expand on everything for when you get even more advanced.

As the bestselling author of "31 Days to Millionaire Marketing Miracles"
I researched extensively on this topic, and mention Perry in my book as
a fantastic resource because cnce you KNOW about Adwords, then you go to
Perry.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool.......2007-05-22

As a novice to SEO, this book is excellent at walking you through all of the items and tools that one needs to implement a solid SEO plan.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-12

I'am very pleased with this book. Definately one of the best books on the subject of SEO.

5 out of 5 stars It's about time.......2007-05-09

As an SEO Consultant for a large design company, I often speak to people who have no idea what SEO is, let alone understand it's sometime tricky nuances. It was very nice to see a "beginner" oriented book that not only made things easy to understand, but touched on some of those tricky parts.

I've read a number of beginning SEO books, and this was by far the best one yet. You will be hard pressed to find information in this writing that will not be pertinent and right on point with search engine guidelines and proper SEO methods. This was very pleasing, and it's about time a beginner book was written to get others started correctly.

2 out of 5 stars Very Basic Beginners Manual.......2007-04-22

As a professional Web Developer, I'm always looking for expanding my skillset. Our company creates very search engine friendly websites, so we have already been doing most of what's in this book. The things we don't already do are actually outdated practices anyway. If you're an average website owner looking for a DIY solution, this will be adequate for you. If you know even a little about SEO already, it'll be like reading an ABC book. You can read it in a day & check off each chapter as 'been there, done that'.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't seem to work for themselves!.......2007-04-11

I searched for "seo tips" and neither of their two websites showed up in the top 20. Uh oh... if they can't make what they preach work for themselves, how can they help *you*, who might have paid for this book?

5 out of 5 stars Reveals the "Secrets" of SEO.......2007-05-17

I am an attorney and there are a lot of companies who are very willing to charge me a lot of money to work magic tricks on my web site to improve my rankings in the search engines. Some of these companies even want to charge me on a perpetual monthly basis over six hundred dollars per month! What a scam!

If you are HTML savvy (as am I.) This book will tell you what to do to create a web site that will get the search engines' attention. If you are not HTML savvy (HTM What???) then this book will give you the information you need to find a web developer who really knows about SEO and is not just telling you what you want to hear in order make a buck.

This book is well written and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars I thought these "Dummies" books really were for dummies.......2007-03-30

I thought these "Dummies" books really were for dummies, so being a seasoned professional in the web design business, I poo pooed this book. Boy, was I wrong. This book has taken my business, AUDIN Web Design, to new levels of Search Engine Optimization nirvana. I've been able to get two keyword phrases for my clients like "dining greenwich" or "la guardia limo". Please note, I don't recommend that any bozo to do their own search engine optimization (leave that to the highly trained and skilled professionals). SEO is a highly complex task, but this book will certainly give you the information you need to interrogate any SEO professional that promises you the world.

3 out of 5 stars Typical Dummies.......2007-03-17

This book covers alot of the basics, but when it starts to get into specifics it turns into a large product endorsment. The book goes over some of the general ideas behind SEO but there are entire chapters that are written as a step by step for some third party software. The book stays true to its title as being "for dummies", but if you are looking for an in depth explanation to some of the specific how-to's. Look elsewhere.

In the books defense it promotes itself as not being for developers, but more for managers that are hiring developers. This might have been nice to know before I purchased it.

5 out of 5 stars Teaches what you need to know, clearly, with no nonsense.......2007-03-15

I am not a techie. I am a lawyer. I would rather not know alot of technie details about the interent. However, I have found that most tech consultants would more approriately be paid in bananas than dollars. This applies with particular force to internet consultants. Like others before me, I have paid substantial sums to have a slick web-site put together, onlly to find that the damm site is utterly invisible to Goggle and requires a search party three days to find.

In short, cold, hard necessity has forced me to learn about the internet and specifically to learn about search engine optimization. I do not go to this area for fun; I go to learn how to advertise my practice.

From that perspective, Kent is fabulous. He explains in clear, simple language this rather pedestrian area. There really is nothing very arcane about this stuff, but that is how I feel AFTER reading Kent, not before. The whole area was a deep dark mystery to me before reading him.

If you need to know this stuff, read Kent. Otherwise, don't; it is not like it is entertaining to read.

2 out of 5 stars Not for Dummies Who Don't Understand Web Design (HTML).......2007-03-07

A lot of good information if you are familiar with HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) Don't most of us today use an Editor when creating our web pages? How many of us are still comfortable using HTML? This book is my second dissapointment this week with the "Dummy Books". Maybe the publishers are no longer winking at us when they refer to us as dummies. Methinks they mean it literally now after after being "taken" twice this week.

In the promo for this book there is no mention there is going to be a heavy reference to and a working knowledge need for HTML. So unless you are buying this book for your guru web editor it will be of limited value.

There are a lot of good ideas in this book, however, the publisher should have been a little more forthcoming about prerequisites necessary to understanding what this book is all about.

4 out of 5 stars Lucene In Action Review`.......2007-01-09

Having had to work with Lucene, this book offers a good overview of the technologies and also how it has been integrated into other solutions such as Nutch and so on. Lucene is used across the board and this is a book I would recommend for anyone interested in Search technologies. It's structured and informative and is a good place to cross-reference Lucene tools also. An example I found was a reference to Luke which is a third-party Lucene tool for analyzing the indexes. I looked up Lucene In Action and it was covered there in good detail along with other third-party tools.

5 out of 5 stars To the point........2006-11-10

Using this book I had a finder window up and running in our Java application in a couple of hours. The book has great examples and you don't have to do a lot of reading to find out what you need to know.

3 out of 5 stars one more okay book.......2006-02-24

This is like a cross refrence book where on each page it refers to other chapters or pages atleast three times. And i would just say it's okay. It doesnt even teach how to crawl web in a good automatic way.

5 out of 5 stars Vital reference.......2005-09-30

Lucene is truly an amazing piece of work. A knowledgeable Java programmer can pick up the API and integrate lucene into their applications very quickly and effectively. There are some excellent examples that come with system, and getting an index built and a search system working is a fun task you can complete in a short afternoon.
There are, however, some conceptual hurdles. Lucene aims to be, and is, an excellent search engine, and nothing more. Surrounding Lucene are a number of other projects and tools for parsing documents, extracting blurbs, highlight results, and so on. On the flip side, Lucene it's self is amazingly configurable. Out of the box is has some excellent defaults, but you can change every aspect of the system.

The "Lucene in Action" book can provide you with the big picture. The book provides excellent examples and give you pointers that will save you time, and make you look (and feel) like you have been developing search systems your whole life. I have the Lucene in Action book now, and I'm using it to re-factor my software application. Had I owned the book at the beginning of my project, I would be six months ahead of where I am today.

5 out of 5 stars Can't miss book for lucene.........2005-08-08

I love the Deitel & Deitel series programming books because of their deliberate intend to teach by real-world examples. It doesn't matter if an author gives you all the techno mombo-jombo behind the software/language if they can't show you how it works in the real-world.

This is where Lucene in Action shines. Every code example is not only useful, cleanly designed, but production ready. This is how a programming book should be designed: simple and straight to the point. In the programming world, a good example is worth 1000 pages of documentation.

Wether you are beginner or advanced programmer, Lucene in Action will make you feel at home and you will not be lost by any of the code or description behind the architecture.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Complete and Thorough.......2006-09-04

The authors offer a total overview of the PPC process with guidance and advice that will be useful and practical. There is an abundance of information to sift through, so take your time and absorb.

4 out of 5 stars Provide a very good overview of PPC advertising.......2006-01-01

Many aspects are discussed in a way that even the neophyte will understand it. My experience being with in fraud detection, I read their description of the problem with great interest. I would have loved to see more emphasis on click validity, impression fraud and other recent aspects of click fraud. The material was not very deep but then it's still a very good introduction for the non-expert.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for paid web advertising campaigns!.......2005-12-17

In the Internet Marketing world, things evolve all the time. Search Engines change their algorithms and criteria and users must adapt if they don't want to get their sites to sink in a sea of millions of other web destinations. Therefore, it pays to be informed about the latest trends and options available to make the most of this dynamic world. Boris Mordkovich presents a book that takes the spot as the most comprehensive and informative book on the topic of paid web advertising campaigns from the classic by Catherine Seda, "Search Engine Advertising". Though that book is even referenced by Mr. Mordkovich as a recommended reading (indeed it's very good), the insights, stats and recommendations provided in "Pay-per-click Search Engine Marketing Handbook" are more current and also cater to an audience with more limited pockets, to allow them to make the most of their marketing budgets. An example of this is the chapter he devotes to the very critical issue of click-fraud, its detection and combat.

As an online marketer with more than four years of experience in the area, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars great resource.......2005-10-13

this book gives a lot of good information and I'd have to say it's a must have reference guide for web designers. Every client wants to know how to market their website, this book is an excellent resource.

5 out of 5 stars read, re-read, and worship.......2005-09-01

This book was completely eye-opening for me, even after having read many such others on the market today. I have applied the Mordkovich brothers' advice to my own company practice, and my internet business has expanded threefold. To anyone just starting out or looking for a boost in sales, this is the best investment you can make!

If you pick your books by their popularity--how many and which other people are reading them--then know this about The Search: it's probably on Bill Gates' reading list, and that of almost every venture capitalist and startup-hungry entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. In its sweeping survey of the history of Internet search technologies, its gossip about and analysis of Google, and its speculation on the larger cultural implications of a Web-connected world, it will likely receive attention from a variety of businesspeople, technology futurists, journalists, and interested observers of mid-2000s zeitgeist.

This ambitious book comes with a strong pedigree. Author John Battelle was a founder of The Industry Standard and then one of the original editors of Wired, two magazines which helped shape our early perceptions of the wild world of the Internet. Battelle clearly drew from his experience and contacts in writing The Search. In addition to the sure-handed historical perspective and easy familiarity with such dot-com stalwarts as AltaVista, Lycos, and Excite, he speckles his narrative with conversational asides from a cast of fascinating characters, such Google's founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin; Yahoo's, Jerry Yang and David Filo; key executives at Microsoft and different VC firms on the famed Sandhill road; and numerous other insiders, particularly at the company which currently sits atop the search world, Google.

The Search is not exactly the corporate history of Google. At the book's outset, Battelle specifically indicates his desire to understand what he calls the cultural anthropology of search, and to analyze search engines' current role as the "database of our intentions"--the repository of humanity's curiosity, exploration, and expressed desires. Interesting though that beginning is, though, Battelle's story really picks up speed when he starts dishing inside scoop on the darling business story of the decade, Google. To Battelle's credit, though, he doesn't stop just with historical retrospective: the final part of his book focuses on the potential future directions of Google and its products' development. In what Battelle himself acknowledges might just be a "digital fantasy train", he describes the possibility that Google will become the centralizing platform for our entire lives and quotes one early employee on the weightiness of Google's potential impact: "Sometimes I feel like I am on a bridge, twenty thousand feet up in the air. If I look down I'm afraid I'll fall. I don't feel like I can think about all the implications."

Some will shrug at such words; after all, similar hype has accompanied other technologies and other companies before. Many others, though, will search Battelle's story for meaning--and fast. --Peter Han

Book Description

How Google and Its Rivals Rewrote the Rules of Business and Transformed Our Culture

• The Wall Street Journal and BusinessWeek Bestseller
• Finalist for the Goldman Sachs/FT Business Book of the Year Award

What does the world want? According to John Battelle, a company that answers that question—in all its shades of meaning—can unlock the most intractable riddles of business and arguably of human culture itself. And for the past few years, that's exactly what Google has been doing.

But The Search offers much more than the inside story of Google's triumph. It's a big- picture book about the past, present, and future of search technology and the enormous impact it's starting to have on marketing, media, pop culture, dating, job hunting, international law, civil liberties, and just about every other sphere of human interest. BACKCOVER: “The Search is a superb story, well written and feverishly researched. Whether you are a student, techie, business executive, budding visionary or just enjoy pop culture, this is a book not to be missed.”
—USA Today

“John Battelle is Silicon Valley's Bob Woodward. One of the founders of Wired magazine, he has hung around Google for so long that he has come to be as close as any outsider can to actually being an insider….The result is a highly readable account of Google's astonishing rise.”
—The Economist

“It's a fascinating story, and Mr. Battelle… tells it well.”
—The Wall Street Journal

“A surprisingly gripping story…The Search yields impressive results, pairing a reportorial eye for detail with an evangelical zeal to help readers understand the import of the search revolution.”
—Wired News

“Battelle…manages to keep things compelling, adding his own trenchant analysis about what Google's rapid evolution and powerful technology might mean for the company and our society as whole.”
—The Associated Press

“A compelling glimpse of the search industry's early years.”
—BusinessWeek

“Deeply researched and nimbly reported.”
—Publishers Weekly

“Indispensable.”
—London Review of Books

“John Battelle has written a brilliant business book, but he's also done something more: he's used the amazing saga of Google to explore what it means to search. All searchers should read it.”
—Walter Isaacson, CEO of the Aspen Institute; former editor of Time; former CEO of CNN

“Nobody, and I mean nobody, has thought longer, harder, or smarter about Google and the search business than John Battelle. If you want to understand the rise of the search economy and culture, you need to read this book.”
—John Heilemann, author of Pride Before the Fall

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Business and Historic lessons.......2007-06-19

This is an excellent book.
First, from the business stand point it describes perfectly how google beat the internet bubble and came up with a very lucrative business model. It has a lot off lessons of how to be an entrepreneur.
Second, from the historic stand point i tells very easy haw the internet and the search technology have grow and evolve and hand by hand, because both are the reason why we have an intenet like we have now.
Third, the book is a lot of fun and very easy to read, it has a lot of inspiring little story like the story of Altavista or the great Bill Gross, what an enterpreneur.
Great book you won't be disapointed

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2007-05-04

Being a non techy, I was enthralled with the way search has developed and the possibilities for the future. The future of not only search, but business models as we know them.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Review of a Fascinating Field.......2007-04-02

This book covers not only the stellar rise of Google, but the entire Web Search industry. Both the business and technical side of this field are covered very clearly and the author makes a convincing argument for its importance to both commercial and private consumers. The most interesting parts of the book are the imaginative projections of how search could change our daily lives.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Read on History in the Making.......2007-03-19

The specific subject of the Search is Google; but the broader subject is the innovative and evolving market for new business models and technologies. This book paints an exciting picture of things to come and business history in the making.

4 out of 5 stars How Do Search Engines Work?.......2007-03-09

I had long been intrigued by the ability of search engines to quickly lay the world's knowledge at our fingertips and wanted to know how they worked. This book well explained the intricacies of search as well as the economics, ethics and future of the field. Certain computer terminolgy is never explained for the uninitiated--a glossary would have been useful. However, these do not detract from an excellent coverage of the main subject. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description

When it comes to advertising on the web, you just can't argue with the numbers. A $7 billion market today is expected to grow to $18.9 billion by 2010. Jupiter Research also estimates that search advertising will be a larger share of the market than display advertising by 2010. These phenomenal numbers are due largely to Google, which has changed the way the world publishes content - and advertises.

Google Advertising Tools from O'Reilly examines the business and technology behind making money with content and advertising on the web. This focused, easy-to-read guide shows you how to use Google's advertising services to make it happen. You'll find all the background information you need to work with Google AdSense, which automatically delivers text and image ads that are precisely targeted to your site, and Google AdWords, which lets you generate text ads that accompany specific search term results.

This book has specific and detailed sections on:

Once you've read all four parts, you'll have a comprehensive picture of how advertising works on the web and how you can use the Google advertising programs to your advantage.

3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2007-01-10

This book was OK, I mean it has some good information but you can find most of it online so it is more of a resource book instead of a book having especially valuable information.

Im glad I bought it cause I now have a resource book on the shelf and dont have to search online and I often have limited time.

If you have the time to research online then do that, otherwise by this book.

3 out of 5 stars a book to begin.......2007-01-07

if you are interested on how search engines work this a book you can start

3 out of 5 stars Useful Information.......2006-12-05

While I found the book useful and inspiring, the author did bounce all over the place and made some strange comments. He even devoted an entire chapter to marketing adult sites, which I thought was a bit strange. Davis wrote at all levels conceptually, theoretically and tactically - which is good. Overall, it's a useful book with good information.

4 out of 5 stars Good information, lack of statistics.......2006-11-10

Overall, this book offered a comprehensive review of the online advertisement options including Amazon associates program, google adsense, adwords and other ads aggregators etc. The author also touched the dos and donts on search optimization. The material covered is targeting business audience and IT professionals; however, it is not really heavy on technical implementation and therefore can be easily digested by average business readers. One small complaint, if more statistics and success stories can be included, this book will be more appealing.

4 out of 5 stars Good book that covers more than just Adsense.......2006-11-08

This is a fairly good book that covers more than just adsense.

Competing revenue programs like adbrite and the Amazon associates programs are also dicussed.
Even adult websites are covered with tips on how to generate money from them.

It also covers Search Engine optimization and submission.

It was an easy read with good tips that should come in useful.

Book Description

Google, the most popular search engine worldwide, provides web surfers with an easy-to-use guide to the Internet, with web and image searches, language translation, and a range of features that make web navigation simple enough for even the novice user. What many users dont realize is that the deceptively simple components that make Google so easy to use are the same features that generously unlock security flaws for the malicious hacker. Vulnerabilities in website security can be discovered through Google hacking, techniques applied to the search engine by computer criminals, identity thieves, and even terrorists to uncover secure information. This book beats Google hackers to the punch, equipping web administrators with penetration testing applications to ensure their site is invulnerable to a hackers search.

Penetration Testing with Google Hacks explores the explosive growth of a technique known as "Google Hacking." When the modern security landscape includes such heady topics as "blind SQL injection" and "integer overflows," it's refreshing to see such a deceptively simple tool bent to achieve such amazing results; this is hacking in the purest sense of the word. Readers will learn how to torque Google to detect SQL injection points and login portals, execute port scans and CGI scans, fingerprint web servers, locate incredible information caches such as firewall and IDS logs, password databases, SQL dumps and much more - all without sending a single packet to the target! Borrowing the techniques pioneered by malicious "Google hackers," this talk aims to show security practitioners how to properly protect clients from this often overlooked and dangerous form of information leakage.

*First book about Google targeting IT professionals and security leaks through web browsing.

*Author Johnny Long, the authority on Google hacking, will be speaking about "Google Hacking" at the Black
Hat 2004 Briefing. His presentation on penetrating security flaws with Google is expected to create a lot of buzz and exposure for the topic.

*Johnny Long's Web site hosts the largest repository of Google security exposures and is the most popular destination for security professionals who want to learn about the dark side of Google.

4 out of 5 stars google, hack, hacking.......2007-01-19

Very informative book, I've been using some of the knowledge I got in the book to improve my searches as well as to test the security of some of my company's web pages.

4 out of 5 stars Great starting Point for New or Intermediate- Reference for advanced.......2006-11-08

You name it someone may have left it in the wrong place. This text is a good reference for everyone interested in information security and honing their research abilities to a razor's edge. As Obijan says "know your target- get inside of his mind." Experts might scoff, but a handy reference. I use it to nail airline miles, among other things...in all honesty I have found some wild things using the standard techniques- really you need a guide on unraveling people's stupidity or, if you are feeling rather viscious lay a trap and hook it with cheese that has unexpected side effects. Fun for the whole family!

4 out of 5 stars got the warm-fuzzy i was looking for..........2006-08-22

I work for a Forture 500 company that is upgrading intranet Search capability using Google Appliance. I bought this book to help determine what risks Google Appliance might expose. The book begins with good overview of the basic Google interface and includes tips for searching. I then expected to get the low-down on hacking using Google. What i discovered was somewhat anticlimactic, there really aren't any serious hacks to be had using Google. Obviously, you must be careful about web-content publishing processes. Also, Google is respectful of content you don't want crawled or exposed (using both Internet Search and intranet appliance).

The book is well-written and was a quick-read. Most of the info can be found online at Google website itself. I am glad i read the book cuz i got the warm-fuzzy i was looking for.

4 out of 5 stars Best-of-class book at using the power of Google!.......2006-02-26

Syngress's "Google Hacking for Penetration Testers" (GHPT) by Johnny Long demonstrates to average Joes the power of Google. The author is the authority on how to use Google to recon an intended target. Considering the narrow focus of the subject, the book is able to thoroughly dissect the various tools and weapons Google offers. Certainly, this book is not admitting anything not already known in the hacking world, but the books does provide a valuable asset as a one-stop-shop at using Google.

First and foremost, before scouting a target, you must cover your tracks. GHPT first focuses on anonymity (I was particularly impressed with using Google as a proxy server on page 95). After masking yourself, the book focuses on network mapping, and locating exploitable targets. The book then offers 10 searches to find oodles of information that website owners probably don't want you to have. One chapter is devoted to tips to hunt usernames and passwords. Chapter 12, on automating Google Searches, was particularly valuable to me as I'm an extreme novice at scripting.

The book is written in a very simple, plain-spoken (or, more correctly, plain-written) style. While this book should not be the first book on one's security shelf, the subject cannot be any better defined than this book.

I give this book 4 pings out of 5:
!!!.!

5 out of 5 stars That is a lot of info!!!.......2006-02-21

It has everything you NEED to learn how to hack w/ using something as simple as Google. i never in my life would have thought you could get that much server info and vuln. info with just using Google. Johnny knows his stuff and this is a must have if you are a novice hacker that wants to stem-away from the title; "script-kiddie", this book will help you.
