Book Description

Despite the fact that Juarez is a Mexican border city just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas, most Americans are unaware that for more than twelve years this city has been the center of an epidemic of horrific crimes against women and girls, consisting of kidnappings, rape, mutilation, and murder, with most of the victims conforming to a specific profile: young, slender, and poor, fueling the premise that the murders are not random.

Indeed, there has been much speculation that the killer or killers are American citizens. While some leading members of the American media have reported on the situation, prompting the U.S. government to send in top criminal profilers from the FBI, little real information about this international atrocity has emerged. According to Amnesty International, as of 2006 more than 400 bodies have been recovered, with hundreds still missing.

As for who is behind the murders themselves, the answer remains unknown, although many have argued that the killings have become a sort of blood sport, due to the lawlessness of the city itself. Among the theories being considered are illegal trafficking in human organs, ritualistic satanic sacrifices, copycat killers, and a conspiracy between members of the powerful Juárez drug cartel and some corrupt Mexican officials who have turned a blind eye to the felonies, all the while lining their pockets with money drenched in blood.

Despite numerous arrests over the last ten years, the murders continue to occur, with the killers growing bolder, dumping bodies in the city itself rather than on the outskirts of town, as was initially the case, indicating a possible growing and most alarming alliance of silence and cover-up by Mexican politicians.

The Daughters of Juárez promises to be the first eye-opening, authoritative nonfiction work of its kind to examine the brutal killings and draw attention to these atrocities on the border. The end result will shock readers and become required reading on the subject for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Brutal Crimes Still Unsolved.......2007-05-30

This is a well-researched and fascinating book. It includes a wealth of information but it's easy to read and hard to put down. Everyone should be aware of the alarming human rights abuses that are detailed in what reads like a thriller but is unfortunately a true story. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Femicide in Mexico.......2007-05-30

This is a true crime book that is hard to put down; it is chilling. I'm not one to usually read books about murders but this one I couldn't resist. Besides, I have spent time along the El Paso / Ciudad Juarez frontier and I had to get the facts right since I am familiar with some of the details over the years through friends and family who live in El Paso. After hearing rumors and rumblings over the past ten plus years I decided to get it straight. Teresa Rodriguez is a fine journalist from Univision whose credentials speak volumes to her integrity so I was drawn to her version according to her investigative reporting. The book is shocking in regard to some of details of the cases and even more shocking when it comes to the Mexican governments investigation, and ineptitude, of the well over 300 murders(more than 400 bodies recovered and hundreds missing) since 1995 of women along the border, in Ciudad Juarez(it has actually spread to Chihuahua City), usually young women who were either students or maquiladora workers. Journalist and author Teresa Rodriquez, does an outstanding job relating and presenting the gruesome realities to light in a chronlogical manner that is woven with contemporary political highlights, local color, geography and history lessons. The author does a fine job of bringing to life the now dead women as she recounts the victims last days, literally step by step before falling prey to the killer or killers. She also sheds light on the victims familiies struggles to find justice and the many stumbling blocks encountered in their pursuit of justice. There are black and white pictures of the victims, families and major players half way through the book that brings everything into reality and ties everything thing together; a face to go with a name makes it all the more real and tragic. Many of the stories of the victims families are too tragic for words to convey. The people who have been tried and convicted for the murders seem to be nothing more than scapegoats. The theories as to who is responsible and why the murders are taking place are numerous. Read for yourself and see what you think. The mystery of who is behind the murders, and who was blamed for the murders still leaves lots of question marks that all seem to lead to the corrupt state police officials. Several brave people who tried to find justice instead found an early death at the hands of hit squads or assasins. After reading this book you will just shake your head in disbelief and disgust. This is a true crime with many answers but more questions as to the credibilty of the answers. Somewhere along the southwest desert a coyote howls and a pack is on the loose, a killer or killers are still on the hunt, picking their prey at will as potential victims go to work or school not knowing if they will be another statistic in the border femicide , to be raped, tortured, mutilated and left discarded for the coyote and the desert animals to feast on their remains; meanwhile the cries for justice go unheard and a coyote continues to howl while the pack hunts in the desert. Recommended for all to understand the scope of this horrific problem in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

5 out of 5 stars Corruption at it's Best!.......2007-05-23

A Must-Read if ONLY to know that these things are real they do happen and are happening and nothing is being done. And the victims are going without justice--a justice denied that comes down from the very top--the President and down.

People should boycott Mexico until these killers are found--if an attorney who defends an innocent scapgoat is shot dead by police and then the scapegoat tortured to death in jail all go unpunished and the President of Mexico admits he can't help stop the killings--what is THAT telling us?!

When they're own police force is suspected of doing the killings yet never questioned, and the deaths continue, and witnessess are sniper-shot at and people suddenly "disappear" or die and others refuse to help for fear of their own lives, it's time to turn the tables on Mexico and hurt them where it counts MONEY.

The ONLY man to ever get some sort of justice was a wealthy trucking company owner who stopped all trucking in and out of Mexico until his daughters body was found, which within 24 hours it was---funny how money seems to talk and make things happen -- so the clear answer is BOYCOTT all Mexico products and even American companies who work in Mexico and hire these poor victims then don't give a squat when they end up dead after their shifts.

A MUST-READ for anyone interested in seeing, feeling, and reading what TRUE HOPELESSNESS AND COMPLETE CORRUPTION OF LAW feels like.

--- LAW-LESSNESS AT IT'S BEST ---

I will NEVER buy anything or go to Mexico as long as the bodies of these young girls continue to pile up on a daily bases---sometimes in broad daylight and neither should anyone else.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-05-20

It is so sad how the injustice takes away our freedom. This book is awesome. My heart goes out to the families who have lost love ones in this tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars if only I had known..........2007-05-15

As a woman who grew up along the Texas/Mexico border, I feel that we have in some way let our neighboring sisters down because this could not have possibly happened...not without our knowledge. After reading this book, I had to go back and reread it in order to fully grasp the gravity of the situation. Teresa helps bring a disturbing truth to the surface. This book is a must-read that will leave you saying...if I had only known.

"The men as they rode turned black in the sun from the blood on their clothes and their faces and then paled slowly in the rising dust until they assumed once more the color of the land through which they passed." If what we call "horror" can be seen as including any literature that has dark, horrific subject matter, then Blood Meridian is, in this reviewer's estimation, the best horror novel ever written. It's a perverse, picaresque Western about bounty hunters for Indian scalps near the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850s--a ragged caravan of indiscriminate killers led by an unforgettable human monster called "The Judge." Imagine the imagery of Sam Peckinpah and Heironymus Bosch as written by William Faulkner, and you'll have just an inkling of this novel's power. From the opening scenes about a 14-year-old Tennessee boy who joins the band of hunters to the extraordinary, mythic ending, this is an American classic about extreme violence.

Book Description

An epic novel of the violence and depravity that attended America's westward expansion, Blood Meridianbrilliantly subverts the conventions of the Western novel and the mythology of the "wild west."  Based on historical events that took place on the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850s, it traces the fortunes of the Kid, a fourteen-year-old Tennesseean who stumbles into the nightmarish world where Indians are being murdered and the market for their scalps is thriving.

3 out of 5 stars Thanks to reviewers..........2007-06-26

I appreciate your warnings. I just got this book (on CD) and was thrilled because it's been hard to find in audio form. I've read and appreciated everything by McCarthy, and couldn't wait for what I'd heard was his "piece de resistance." Now I think I'll skip it. I need roaring horror (as a friend of mine says) "like another neurosis." Maybe I'll change my mind; I've always been fairly impervious to violence. I loved The Road, and Deadwood is my favorite TV series. But this sounds over-the-top, 'Blood' curdling. I think I'll leave my blood uncurdled for the moment. If I change my mind, I'll write a review. Again, thank you for your, ahem, candor.

5 out of 5 stars This novel is experienced rather than read.......2007-06-20

This novel is an experience. I am not sure where to begin. It is not bound by proper character development or narrative trajectory. The most important event of the novel is never revealed--the reader is left to imagine that event, or at least sit uncomfortably with the implication of that event. And I suppose that is the most remarkable thing about the novel, the way the reader is implicated. But there is also the language, the imagery, the iconoclasm.

McCormac drives the narrative forward in unconventional ways. There is the sheer spectacle of violence and all the qualities of great writing. There are the questions raised in the reader's mind: How far will these men go? What events will force them to greater extremes? What kind of ugliness resides in the landscape ahead?

There is little question as to brutality of these men. I was never waiting for any sort of redemption or failure or revelation. There is no evidence in the text that such things are available in the world of this novel.

It is a novel of hyper-reality, of haunting images, of brilliant monologues. It is the sort of novel that makes me want to stop writing.

There are similarities between "Blood Meridian" and "All the Pretty Horses." The protagonists of both novels are 14-16 year old males. There are similar themes: an inability to deal justly with the world at hand, a longing for a world that is gone, transformative power of violence, loyalty, landscape, animals.

And not that this should be any measure, but I also noticed that "Blood Meridian" was not a best seller like the border trilogy. And that perhaps highlights one of the defining features of this book, it demands a lot of the reader.

1 out of 5 stars too violent.......2007-06-13

all about violence and no plot what so ever. guess people think he is cool because he writes so violent. I find him boring.

5 out of 5 stars Brutal yet beautiful. . ........2007-05-10

I had never read McCarthy but picked up this book along with "The Road" due to all the Hype from the Oprah book club selection. While the "The Road" is a very good book it is not the masterpiece of "Blood Meridian." This is the most powerful books I have ever read. McCarthy's style is highlighted here: sharp, dry, brittle, and panoramic. I was enraptured by how McCarthy was able to capture the imagery of the southwest landscape with his words. The story itself is horrific, epic, and yet commonplace, the conquering of the west and its people by the whiteman has been better illustrated. On top of all this McCarthy is a grand story teller, who can stretch the limits of imagination without losing the common touch-in other words he keeps it REAL. This is a challenge, but worthy one! On a lighter note I also recommend "Across the high Lonesome," a book set in the modern American west I picked up after seeing Larry McMurtry give it props.Across the High Lonesome

It's OK. I bought it, but could have lived without it. The sections include: Introduction, Texture, Size, Notes, Ribs, Ruffles, Lace, Fringes, Flora, Points & Picots, Patterns, Stitches, Abbreviations, Techniques, Acknowledgments, & Recourses.

This is an excellent book for beginner or intermediate knitters. Experienced knitters would have already used many of these ideas in their self-designed knitted project. It's a nice reference book for them.

2 out of 5 stars Where are the corrections????.......2006-12-18

There are many mistakes in this book...and it is poorly written. Patterns should be more clear. One person stated she couldn't find any errors...well I beg to differ with you, so far every pattern I've started has errors and have not been able to complete either project because of them. what is up with P1 P5...????? why not p6????? I do not understand that and have never seen it before....crazy

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring book to use as a springboard for your knitting imagination.......2006-12-09

After much deliberation, I decided to buy the three Nicky Epstein books in this series (On the Edge, Over the Edge, Beyond the Edge). Each of these books are just gorgeous, filled with color illustrations of each border or design on glossy pages. In essence, I'll be reviewing all three of the books together, but focusing on this one since I'm currently doing a border from it.

While I'd heard of Nicky Epstein (if you're into knitting, I don't see how you couldn't!), I waited about a year before buying her books, and I'm glad I did. I needed the time to become a better knitter. I consider myself an advanced beginner or an intermediate knitter, and I don't think these are books for beginners. For one thing, they're not meant to be pattern books. There are very few patterns included in them (and the ones that are there are pretty scary looking! When I was first learning to knit I would have given up, because they're very complex-looking). The author assumes that her audience would know how to do some of the more advanced stitches used in her border patterns, and that they would also have some experience under their belt to figure out how to use her borders in bigger projects like sweaters or blankets or whatever.

That being said, I'm taking a star off because it's really hard to find errata for this book on the internet. I had to do some searching before I found a scant two or three corrections on the Vogue Knitting website. I spent two days working and reworking a specific border (the Serendipity, p.83) before I realized that the numbers the author had listed for how many stitches the pattern worked over were wrong. As I continued in the pattern, I found other number errors in it. When I looked for corrections, I couldn't find any for that specific pattern. Since I know this book has been out for a while, I would hope that all the pattern errors would have been worked out in later printings. Other than that, a great book and totally worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Some mistakes not the fault of the author........2006-09-12

Sometimes not being able to work a pattern doesn't mean the book has a mistake. For instance, p.139 "Butterfly" does not have different numbers of stitches on each row. Notice that "Embossed Hearts" on the same page ends each row differently worded than does "Butterfly." If not read carefully, "Butterfly" would seem to say do the repeat as many times as required, then knit #. But it says to "end last rep k#." So the last repeat of each row ends with a different number of knit stitches than the other repeats in the row. I counted it out and it works.

I also checked several more throughout the book in response to another review that said the first row always required more stitches than were cast-on. In the couple dozen that I checked, none were wrong.

I understand this book has errors. But we must not be blind to our own and instead blame the author.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Please. Spare me this book........2007-04-16

The previous reviewer has it on the mark. I patiently formed my own opinion, and reached just about the same conclusion. I am forced to use this text as one of two final courses in an MBA program to coincide with final projects.

If one hasn't achieved the mindset this book tries to instill, by the time you get this far in a program to use the text, you've already missed the train. Through very long case studies and short chapters, you review everything you ever learned about business. It is so slow and common sensical, you wonder who the book is trying to reach. It has little commentary and presents the idea of transnational organizations as a textbook concept. Boring, frustrating, basic.

I dread this book. The very sight of it makes me cringe and brings on acid reflux. Make sure you get your magnifying glass out, you'll need it. The text is in about a 8 or 9 font. This book may present more of a test of nerves, patience and sanity than it does a convincing or compelling read and study on transnational management.

1 out of 5 stars Typical academia ego-boosting drivel.......2007-01-31

This book demonstrates the never-ending supply of ego-boosting drivel put out by academia every year! Retailing for nearly $150.00, it is barely more than a collection of case studies and long-winded, over explained obscure topics. Containing over 800 pages, only ~114 are dedicated to actual chapter material. In addition to the over-whelming mass of case material, there are 3 to 4 "Readings" at then end of each chapter section. These, too, are nothing more than ego-boosting drivel. I get the feeling that this book, with little substance, was just a way to sell case studies and collect royalties. For only ~114 pages of actual discussion, this book should not have cost more than $25 - and that's stretching it.

If you want to get a REAL education on business in a global setting, pick up the latest business magazine or weekly news periodical. In less than 30 minutes you will have a REAL world lesson in REAL time. For even more current global business topics and learning opportunities, try the internet sites of leading business and news magazines.

This textbook, and educational institutions' use of, perfectly illustrates why so many students graduate without the practical knowledge necessary to cope in the REAL business world.

In a world that constantly re-invents itself, textbook education (and this one in particular) is no way to stay competitive and current!

My sympathy goes out to every student forced to endure the use of this textbook (and 1000's others just like it)

Part bildungsroman, part horse opera, part meditation on courage and loyalty, this beautifully crafted novel won the National Book Award in 1992. The plot is simple enough. John Grady Cole, a 16-year-old dispossessed Texan, crosses the Rio Grande into Mexico in 1949, accompanied by his pal Lacey Rawlins. The two precocious horsemen pick up a sidekick--a laughable but deadly marksman named Jimmy Blevins--encounter various adventures on their way south and finally arrive at a paradisiacal hacienda where Cole falls into an ill-fated romance. Readers familiar with McCarthy's Faulknerian prose will find the writing more restrained than in Suttree and Blood Meridian. Newcomers will be mesmerized by the tragic tale of John Grady Cole's coming of age.

Book Description

Now a major motion picture from Columbia Pictures starring Matt Damon, produced by Mike Nichols, and directed by Billy Bob Thornton.

The national bestseller and the first volume in Cormac McCarthy's Border Trilogy, All the Pretty Horses is the tale of John Grady Cole, who at sixteen finds himself at the end of a long line of Texas ranchers, cut off from the only life he has ever imagined for himself.  With two companions, he sets off for Mexico on a sometimes idyllic, sometimes comic journey to a place where dreams are paid for in blood.  Winner of the National Book Award for Fiction.

My reluctance turned to joy and determination as I whiped through the pages as fast as I possibly could. This book has everything: joy, romance, action, life changing events, tragedy, unexpected twists, not to mention human loss and suffering. I found this book to be well written, and much better than the movie that attempted to capture it's essence a few years back (Matt Damon is in the movie). This book lives up to the five star votes it has received from so many readers. I hope you enjoy, I did.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-06-20

This is a classic novel, solid writing and straightforward narrative. The narrative is driven forward by John Grady Cole's desire--his desire for a bygone era of Western ranches, his desire for the daughter of a wealthy Mexican ranch owner, his desire to act by his own strict ethical code in a world that is largely indifferent to such a code.

The novel is full of great passages of descriptive prose, drawing out the landscape before the narrative settles down into the characters and action. The expansive descriptions remind me of the way a Western film pans out to the cowboy landscape, to the lone men in the landscape, to horses and cattle. It reminded me somewhat of Zane Gray novels or similar such genre work, except the characters are much more complex, and of course the language is nothing like a genre Western. It is only the plot that makes me think of classic Westerns--working cowboys, guns, horses, the pretty daughter of wealthy landowners.

I tend to read for long stretches, so there were moments when the rhapsodic descriptions of landscape seemed repetitive--almost as though the writer felt obliged to remind the reader that this was after all the Great American West. I didn't need to be reminded and the descriptions often took me out of the action. Though I suspect that I might not have noticed it if I did not read at such long sittings.

McCarthy created secondary characters very well. Some of the greatest insights come from Alfonsa, the aunt of the beautiful daughter. The characters of the ranch-hands and town folk are nicely filled out. They are not simply backdrops or props, off of which bounce the protagonist or the action. They have their own lives and their own stories. It adds depth and credibility to the story. And all these characters are smart. That is one important thing that comes through in this novel; the characters are always the smartest people in the room.

It is refreshing to read a book that does not employ those little cliff-hangers, those chapters that end like a Scooby Doo episode or an after-school special--to borrow from the end of the first chapter of American Pastoral, "I was wrong. Never more mistaken about anyone in my life." Or the end of the second chapter, "...only then did I discover that Jerry Levov, having arrived late, was among us." This always feels cheap to me.

McCarthy runs the narrative out. I don't know what life will bring for Grady, but I do know that this story was the defining moment of his life. Everything that happens to him will either spring from or be compared to this trip to Mexico.

4 out of 5 stars Like the moon in the dark desert sky, this book is like a long and beautiful music note.......2007-05-23

I cherished the slow rides across the desert with the rich imagry and the long contemplations about life, love and God (which might be horses?). There are few explantions -- things happen because that's the way they are and answers either come much later or perhaps never at all. Life in this time requires complete trust in oneself and patience. It is a much different world than we live in today with our constant need for answers and information - perhaps that is why the book seemed like such an escape. All of this is illustrated through the story of John Cole and Lacey Rawlins and their sometimes companion Blevins and their trek through Mexico. I have yet to come across another author who's style, prose and imagry can compare to McCarthy's. I am a desert worshiper and appreciate that McCarthy captures so well, and helped to show me more, the bounty of life and beauty that the desert holds.

5 out of 5 stars literary masterpiece.........2007-05-09

perhaps the most memorable of the Border Trilogy..Cormac McCarthy takes a little getting used to as far as his literary style but once you find the rhythm of his words sit back and enjoy being transported to a world of masterful prose..John Grady Cole is 16, parents divorced and his grandfather, the only adult he's close to dies then his world changes..deprived of life on his grandfather's ranch after it's sold..he decides to cross the border into Mexico..he's joined on the trip by an old friend, Lacey Rawlins..along the way they meet another teenager, Jimmy Blevins, most likely riding a stolen horse..the three amigos ride into Mexico..and what awaits is a journey that turns them from kids into men..in a harsh Western way..beautifully told...splendid imagery..

1 out of 5 stars Threw it away........2007-04-18

Horrible. Simply horrible. Picked this book up at a book fair and struggled to make my way through it. I understand the whole somewhat unique approach the author took to his language in writing this drivel, but it's just painful to read. So many times I'll have to re-read a section, just to make sure I know who's speaking. It's a dumb story, not well told at all, and I found it hard to care about any of the characters at all. I didn't even finish it. Stopped about 15 pages from the end and literally threw this book in the trash just so no one will ever have to set eyes on this piece of garbage ever again.

In this work of grave beauty and searing powerone of the most widely praised pieces of investigative reporting to appear in recent yearswe follow 26 men who in May 2001 attempted to cross the Mexican border into the desert of southern Arizona, through the deadly region known as the Devils Highway, a desert so harsh and desolate that even the Border Patrol is afraid to travel through it, a place that for hundreds of years has stolen mens souls and swallowed their blood. Only 12 of the men made it out.

5 out of 5 stars Urrea's Masterful Narrative.......2007-06-13

Touching story about everyday life at the border.

5 out of 5 stars The Rabbit.......2007-02-20

Once upon a time, there was a rabbit and he was rather licious. lol...Good review...Don't strangle the chickens or choke them.

2 out of 5 stars An Everyday Tragedy in the Southwest.......2006-11-11

As a resident who has lived in Yuma, Arizona for the past nine years and read the daily paper and watched the nightly news giving scant details about one or two bodies found here or there, presumed to be those of "illegals" -- Urrea brings to the reader the faces and lives of the human beings behind the numbers. I often think of the deceased that are briefly mentioned in these news blurbs and wonder where they came from, whom they have left behind and what dreams of theirs did the desert kill? And is the desert what really killed them? Or was it some errant Border Patrol agent or a frustrated and pissed off Minuteman? Just what are they so pissed about, anyhow?
Regarding the immigrants and their motivations for leaving their beloved behind for the north, Urrea certainly answered some of my questions. No, America, they are not all criminals, drug runners or people out to get your top jobs! They just want to make enough to feed their families and if they're lucky, save enough to buy a little building material for a house or to start up a small business. I have yet to hear any of my friends or acquaintances get excited about applying for jobs in agriculture or plucking chickens!
This book should be recommended reading for our government leaders, the INS, and ALL law enforcement agencies - they might just be able to figure out a plan for immigration reform! Just be sure to read the interview of Mr. Urrea in the Reading Group Guide at the end of the book -- the numbers (profits) will amaze you. As this book painfully demonstrates, fences are not going to do anything but make death in the desert an even more certain fate for crossers.
Thank you, Mr. Urrea, for giving the world a clear and concise picture of what is really going on in our corner of the country and our part of the globe, for that matter. As I drive along I-8 going to either San Diego or Phoenix and offer my usual prayer for those who have died so close by, I can promise that the names of Edgar, Abraham, Jose and Reymundo will not be forgotten. I will even have a prayer for Mendez.

4 out of 5 stars Great personal view of immigration.......2006-11-02

Urrea brings us up close and personal by sharing the real lives of those who risk crossing the border and the Border Patrol officers that try to stop them. A painful story, well told.

5 out of 5 stars The Devils Highway.......2006-08-07

Not being a avid reader ,if a book doesn't interest me in the first few pages I put it away. This certainly was not such a book. Written by a Mexican American I expected the story to be slanted toward anti immigration only to find a balanced view of the Border situation from the prospective of those desperate to make a better life for their familys, to the Border Patrol and the almost impossible job before them. Two things that stand out are the compassion of the Border Patrol and how the immigrants are so often preyed upon by their own people. A must read before making a judgement about our border situation and the people who live {and die} there.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price.......2007-04-11

I have Ms Epstein's other books,Knitting Over The Edge: Unique Ribs, Cords, Appliques, Colors, Nouveau: The Second Essential Collection of Decorative Borders which I enjoyed and Knitting Beyond the Edge: Cuffs and Collars*Necklines*Hems*Closures - The Essential Collection of Decorative Finishes about which I was somewhat less enthused. I decided to get this book, because I was looking for ideas for embelishments, and there it was: "Embellishments," just what I was looking for, so I got it.

I think some of the appliqués are quite imaginative, particularly some of the leaves and pieced flower designs as well as many of the knitted cord appliqué designs, like the Celtic knots and most of the closures in the last few pages of the book. (I do love "frogs.") I will certainly try the technique myself.

The appliqué cord technique was also used effectively for faux cables, and although I enjoy tackling a complex cable from time to time as an exercise, I could see the appliqué system for cables as a very effective way of getting a project completed. It would also allow one to experiment with a design to decide what type of cable looks best on a completed sweater, and just where on the sweater it will most enhance the wearer--and all this without having to rip apart the sweater and do it over again!

The integration of beading into some of the edgings was also interesting and not something I would have thought of myself, because I'm not (yet) a beader. I could imagine the technique making something very special from something quite simple. However some of the designs for heavily beaded tassels seem just way too over the top.

I also like the way cross stitch and embroidery in flosses or yarns could be added to a finished sweater to give the piece the look of fairisle, intarsia, entrelac, and tapestry without the bulk and carryovers that occur with the first two.

I am not, however, a great fan of "bobbles" or raised edgings. I enjoy the technique of the former for its cleverness, and have added bobbles to things like purses, but they tend to make knitted and crocheted products look bulky and awkward in places that should probably not be emphasized on some individuals. (My figure, for instance, is bulky and awkward enough thank you.) Maybe on a very slim person, but definitely not a decorative technique I'd use for the more "mature" shape.

The designs are well illustrated and enlarged enough for the reader to see the techniques displayed. The author uses the method of charted instructions, which I usually find somewhat difficult to follow but which I can see as very useful for visualizing the finished product and its construction.

Most of my objections, though valid from my own perspective, might not be true of others. Maybe one likes heavily beaded tassles, maybe someone else enjoys bobbles. As one of the other reviewers notes; there's something for everyone in this book.

All in all a book well worth the price to add to ones craft library.

5 out of 5 stars A Little Something for Everyone.......2007-02-10

I know, I know: "don't judge a book by its cover." But that is exactly why I had passed on this instructional before. The cover - which doesn't invite anyone to even pick up this book - is an awful diversion from the quality of information found here. Apparently, Epstein found an new editor or photographer to give her current works much, much more visual appeal.

Recently, I bought this and was surprised at what I found. This book is a great place to start! It's actually the 'Cliff Notes' to Epstein's other works - a springboard into the 'Edge' series. I have not bought any of the "Edge" series, only because they seem overwhelming and I didn't think I would actually use them (at least at this point in my knitting life). There is enough variation in patterns, ideas, and techniques to challenge and inspire anyone! This skimmed version is a great place to start. I'm encouraged to pick up her other books and reweigh their value in my knitting library.

5 out of 5 stars Great BOOK!.......2007-01-16

My cut and sew knitwear professor recommended this book to me because it clearly illustrates every step to the knit embellishments. I really love the book and frequently refer to it when I need help coming up with a good idea to improve knit garments. I would recommend this book to a pro or an amatuer because it is really simple to follow along.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best in it's field .......2006-03-01

This book is one of the best in it's filed --at least of the ones that I have seen. I am a great Nicky Epstein fan, because she is so thorough and knows her stuff. You can find a ton of inspiration to embellish and improve your knitted pieces, or any other garment, bag, hat, pillow, toy, etc., for that matter, as the embellishments shown will be wonderful to personalize any item you wish to "treat". The instructions are precise and detailed enough for any but the novice knitter, without being too lengthy. The pictures give you a clear impression of what your result will be. I am glad to have bought this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! It's about time..........2007-03-30

With Americans paying punishing prices for healthcare, this easy-to-read guidebook could be a Godsend for many. I hope it lights a path for a new wave of health travelers and gives more people a chance to live longer, healthier lives. Kudos to Mr. Woodman and his research team.

5 out of 5 stars Medical care in a Global Village.......2007-03-23

Along with so many other things in our lives these days, it appears health care is also now part of our global village. After reading Woodman's book, and seeing clips on the news and NPR, it is obvious that other countries are offering global health care. I certainly have my own horror stories about hospitals in our country, and find it very comforting to know that there are options now. The pictures of the hospitals are a far cry from ours here. Even my husband said "when do we check in?" The book is definitely on the edge of something very big, and I was happy to learn how to go about getting help and treatment in other countries. As we get older, Steve and I are glad to feel that we have a choice to travel to another country to get treated decently.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Comprehensive.......2007-03-20

I found 'Patients Beyond Borders" to be incredibly helpful when navigating the complex issue of medical travel. Great contact information - helpful advice - easy to understand and it covers all the bases with listings by country and procedure. I found the treatment index, budget planner and comparative pricing information very valuable and was impressed with all of the specific information in the book. A true resource for anyone considering traveling abroad for healthcare.

What you see is not always what you get - and this true story of a man and his dog is no exception. Woven just under the surface of this simple parable, Keller presents profound spiritual truth. It is the story of Lass, a worthless animal thought to be untrainable, who becomes a magnificent and valuable sheepdog - not terribly unlike how God's love can transform our worst characteristics into blessings that serve to further His Kingdom. Allow yourself to see Biblical truth in this classic tale of what can happen when you yield to the Master.

This book is warm story that shows the relationship of trust and loyalty built between an abused dog and his new owner. I highly recommend it to any and all.

Worthy of a re-read from time to time. Among other messages, a gentle reminder of the spirit of service we are all meant to demonstrate!

Be sure to get this little book to go with "A shepherd looks at psalm 23". It will open you eyes to your relationship with our good shepherd and it may put you to shame as to how willing are you to follow His call.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely Dogs.......2006-01-24

Did you know that not all things have to be taught by people? In Lessons from a Sheep Dog By Phillip Keller you will learn things from sheep dogs you thought could only be taught by people.

Lass, a non well trained sheep dog, teaches the farmer about discipline, trust, and love. Although Lass wasn't trained the farmer learned that he needs to show Lass who is in charge. Also he learns that if he doesn't trust Lass then Lass will just be stuck as a puppy forever. Then love because Lass was more then a sheep dog she was the farmers best friend. This story was told in the narrator point of view. The author kind of wrote in a creative way because he didn't straight up tell that Lass was teaching the farmer about life but you could still tell that that is what the author was trying to get through our brains. This story takes place on a farm. One connection I made was "I like this character because he knows how to show Lass who is boss."

This book was pretty good and I would recommend this novel to people who like dog books. This book was also exciting and loving.
