Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Helped us Charter the BVI's .......2007-03-29

We have chartered a boat the last two years in the British Virign Islands, this book was a great help when it came to visualizing the islands and where to find mooring balls. Others we have traveled with have also purchased the book.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for boating the Virgin Islands.......2007-02-14

On a recent boating trip to the Virgin Islands we found this book invaluable. Very detailed information on many of the popular anchorages with outstanding aerial photos. My only wish is that they expand it to include a few more of the anchorages.

4 out of 5 stars Virgin Anchorages Photos.......2007-01-12

Excellent photos, probably don't need to vacation there as the photos take you there. Cruisers don't miss this one!

5 out of 5 stars I will make good use of this anchorage guide!!!.......2005-10-19

The graphic images will surely help our crew find appropriate and safe anchorages in the British Virgin Islands in our upcomming bareboat catamaran cruise. I hope the authors will keep up the good work and produce other works like this.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely useful when sailing in the Virgin Islands.......2004-08-29

We first saw this book in the nav station on a Moorings boat that we chartered in the British Virgin Islands. We looked it over and thought "These pictures are gorgeous. Why do they include it? Maybe they want to sell it to us." The Moorings doesn't sell it and, as of Summer 2004, they are not including new copies on boats because too many people took them home. It is a gorgeous picture book of anchorages in the Virgin Islands. It is not just a pretty picture book though.

Overleaf from every photograph is a copy of the picture with lines to show reefs and the passage into the harbor. In our two trips to the British Virgin Islands, these pictures have been extremely helpful more than once to get a picture of what we were doing. While text descriptions are helpful, sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words when you are looking for a bouy, and you sure don't have time to read a thousand words.

This is a great supplement to the Cruising Guide to the Virgin Islands and I wouldn't go to the BVI without it.

    5 out of 5 stars Stephen P's First Guide.......2001-10-26

I have been cruising the Bahamas for over 30 years. For all these long times there was just one cruising guide available. And it was quite limited in scope. The along came Stephen Pavlidis. He has singlehandedly upgraded the quality and safety of Bahamas cruising . His Exumas Cruising Guide is the most complete information you can get for that area. I wouldn't think of cruising the Exumas without it. Stephen Crow, K4CPX

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it.......2000-07-29

I have cruised the Exumas four winters on my Jeanneau 41. I wouldn't think of doing it without Steven's wonderful book. He includes, for example, many chartlets not to be found in any other guide. Hence, I was able to find anchorages not well known (and which had, as a result, more lobster!).

Don't even think of visiting the Exumas without this book (or any other area included in his other guidebooks without its associated book).

5 out of 5 stars Essential and Comprehensive.......1998-04-16

I found the book to be the Bible for getting in and around the Exuma Cays. More importantly, the book nicely deals with the history, geography, flora and fauna of the cays. There is no way that a person should consider sailing, motoring or paddling into the Exumas without this book in hand. Too bad it was not printed on waterproof paper and bound with stainless steel staples. If your headed for the Exumas be sure to read and bring a copy along. It might also help to secure it in a large zip lock plastic bag.

A comprehensive treatment of current fastening technology including inserts, post-installed anchors, as well as power-actuated fasteners, in both concrete and masonry. The section "Fastenings in Concrete" describes in detail these elements together with their behavior and load-bearing capacities in cracked and uncracked concrete, while also considering the effects of corrosion and fire, as well as earthquake and shock loading. It concludes with an assessment of fastenings, illustrated by numerous examples. The "Fastenings in Masonry" section goes on to deal with several different types of masonry and describes the load bearing characteristics with an assessment of plastic fastenings and injection-molded anchors, including criteria for selecting the correct fastening.

The concepts and ideas in this book are covered very well.
Where other references and text books only scratch the surface and do not give engineers guidance in more challenging applications, this book helps tremendously.

This book will also help engineers undertand the mechanisms and failure modes of anchoring which is required now in the United State's International Building Code.

5 out of 5 stars Cruising the ICW to Florida.......2007-01-12

I was helping a friend bring his boat from South Carolina to Southwest Florida. This was my second trip on the ICW and his first. We were constantly referencing this book in conjuncion with our charts for information about the waters and hazards we were cruising. Very information and wouldn't do the trip again without it.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for cruising preparation.......2005-10-23

A friend and I are planning a first time cruise of approximately 1000 miles of the ICW. To assist in our preparations, we have been reading any and all material we can find on ICW cruising. This appears to be one of the most insightful and digestible pieces we have found. A special bonus for me is the home base of the author, Skipper Bob. My friend lives on Hilton Head Island and has been searching among his friends and neighbors, without much success, for someone to talk to who has cruised the ICW. I, on the other hand, live in southcentral Pennsylvania and was delighted to discover that Skipper Bob lives within 10-15 miles of me. His phone number (as well as his email address) is provided in the book. When I called him, he was only too willing to talk about my project on the phone. Further, he was amenable to meeting for face-to-face conversations and was sincerely interested in providing helpful information and suggestions. I recommend the book to any would-be cruisers.

A must for traveling the Intercoastal Waterway for all levels of cruising sailor because it is very detailed. It is continuosly updated with new yearly editions and by viewing new current information on the author's website.

        Book Description

Treating anchorages as a direct application of the laws of statics and the theories governing the transfer of load, this book focuses on designs that are safe and reasonably priced. It is divided into two parts. Following a general introduction in the first chapter, Part One goes on to explore anchor systems, components, installation and construction details. Presents special anchor systems such as extractable, compression-type, multibell, and regroutable anchors. Analyzes the transfer of load and its relation to failure modes and anchor load capacity; deals with design considerations; covers mechanisms and types of corrosion; and details anchor stressing, testing programs, and evaluation standards. Part Two considers uses and applications and design aspects of anchored structures; presents design examples of practical value and reasonable simplicity; and incorporates examples and case histories.

1 out of 5 stars A pretty book; but more like a hard cover Ad.......2006-11-10

I sail on The Chesapeake Bay. I love my time there and I read volumes about the places, what else is there to do in the winter months. I have sailed to many of the places in this book. I was a bit disappointed by the content. It was like reading one of those "books" you find in a hotel room that talks about the area but is really just there to sell you something. It has some worthwhile text but you get hit by what is really an ad for someplace. I wish it were more of a review then a selling piece. I was disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A Unique View of the Chesapeake Bay.......2004-06-24

I like this book. The format is really different and useful. The book is mainly a collection of low altitude aerial photographs of Chesapeake Bay ports and anchorages. The photos are nice and clear with very good detail. And a real plus is that they have annotated the pictures to point out where things like marinas and restaurants are located. Seems like a great way to orient yourself to a new area before you arrive. A fairly brief written description of each port is also included, but the photos are really the star of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Practical Tips.......2003-09-06

This book is a great overview of Anchorage. It has good tips especially on entertainment and restaurants. I have been to Anchorage a lot, and this is my favorite overall book for practical advice...it is always in my bag when I go to Alaska. Others have said that it is getting out of date, which might be true in certain instances, but I personally haven't found any problems with currency.

For the money and practicality I love this book. It's small, generally accurate and inexpensive.

3 out of 5 stars Good but starting to get out-of-date.......2003-02-06

We used this book for a trip we took in January of 2003 and found that a few of the items are starting to get out of date. i.e. one of the museums listed in the book no longer exists and resturant names have changed. The book is copyrighted in 2000 so it's time for a new edition.

I liked the format and the info it gave, just beware and double check the listings.

5 out of 5 stars very entertaining and helpful.......2001-07-21

I read this book before my trip to Anchorage and was not disappointed with the advice. My friends and I found the info to be concise and accurate. The Arctic Roadrunner, a recommended restaurant, was every bit as good as the book says.

I would recommend this to anyone considering visiting or moving to the lovely city of Anchorage.
