Book Description
Are You Ready to Open to Love's Deepest Bliss?
Every woman knows the fairy tale: find the right man, give him what he wants and needs, and he'll love you forever. But when the myth you've been asked to believe fails to deliverwhen you sense you've been settling for far less than you know in your heart is possiblehow do you attract and keep a man capable of meeting what you most passionately yearn for? In Dear Lover: A Woman's Guide to Men, Sex, and Love's Deepest Bliss, David Deida explores every aspect of the feminine practice of spiritual intimacy, from sexuality and lovemaking to family and career to emotions, trust, and commitment. Written as a collection of letters from a man to his "dear lover," here is this internationally acclaimed writer's invitation to practice love as a living art, as you discover: Why your man is always your choiceand how to pick the man of deep integrity who will satisfy the needs of your body, heart, and spirit "Sexual essence" and the three stages of loving: how to understand your fluctuating capacity to experience divine connection with another Knowing when to end a relationship and how to deal with the "him-shaped void" your absent man leaves behind Daily exercises to help you and your partner move from separation to openness in two-bodied devotional trust Ultimately, what every woman wants is to give and receive love fully. Whether you're partnered or alone, Dear Lover reveals that "your love is the same love that yearns to open at everybody's heart. You will attract and inspire a man as willing and able to open as you are. Constant yearning is the call to open and give yourself to all as love's offering."
Customer Reviews:
so repetitive !! .......2007-06-11
I dont understand why this book gets such good reviews.... the writing is mind numbingly repetitive and the point gets lost. David Deida was recommended to me but I find this book very disapointing.
There are better books out there ... Charles Muir comes to mind, Margot Anand.... and a multitude of others.
Excellent.......2007-02-06
A great book from a great writer.
Also highly recommend WAY OF THE SUPERIOR MAN,
and SECRETST OF SENSUAL LOVEMAKING by Leonardi.
Dear Lover: for every women who has ever yearned or denied her yearning.......2006-11-10
for a deep blissful spiritual connection with a partner. A tad of redundant mid way, but gets fresh again. I bought several copies to give away as gifts to other women in my life for inspiration. I could not put this book down. Do not hesitate to buy Dear Lover.
Deeply profound, poetic help with love challenges.......2006-06-20
My hubbie and I took turns reading this book and Deida's "Way of the Superior Man' out loud with each other. WOW, I literally cried as he read Deida's words because it seemed that finally someone understood what I have longed for all my life. Sure, there were things I didn't like hearing, and even disagreed with, but overall wonderful insights and leaps of growth in our relationship directly as a result of these readings.
Tho I have read many many books on the subject of love relationships--these two books are head & shoulders above any of the others.
I've never written a book review before until Deida's work...it is that good!

bliss.......2006-03-20
I found this book to be all a romantic could want. I don't understand why it is so uncommon to hear a man speak about his feelings this way. However after reading a couple of his books I have a better understanding.

This is a great book.......2001-10-18
I have read this book over and over. I agree with other reviewers that the first half is better than the second half. However, that first half is really worth the read. As I write this, the book is out of stock so try and find a used copy. Do not be put off by the title that deals with war. As Dr Cowan states in the book, if you were doing anything else, say at work, you would be careful to research your subject and know as much about it as possible. Do not approach love half blind, knowing only your own side of how things work. Dr Cowan gives many valuable insights that you need to know if you are a woman trying to find a man, or trying to attract that one elusive man that you can't quite seem to win over. I have read many books on this subject, and there are many useful texts and perspectives, but this one really makes you realize some things about yourself, about men and about the male/female relationship. In particular he talks about women needing the security of a relationship to feel safe having sex, and men needing sex, to feel safe enough to enter a relationship. At one point you find yourself thinking it is amazing that any relationship ever gets off the ground when you realize the different ways men and women approach the whole thing. But you read on, and you read it over, and somehow it all starts to fall into place. This book gave me the knowledge and the courage to persevere with the one man who I was truly interested in and some tools to put to use in pursuit of him and I am so grateful that I did not give up. This book has really helped me.
The Art of War for Lovers.......2000-10-02
This is a well written and intelligent view of the battle of the sexes. Insightful and realistic in the acceptance of imperfection in us all. I particularly identified with waiting it out and not giving up until you are sure you can take no more.
The suggestions offered in order to smooth the path of tantrum, which of course, follows Tantra, or as they call it, HEAVY GROUND, was well placed and more realistic than those who suggest getting out if he looks at you sideways. I suggest this is folllowed with, GETTING TO I DO, which gives a balance to the ideas written here. The titles of both these books detract from their content quite a bit. The parallel with ancient wisdom of the warrior was a bit thin.
Of necessary reading for me, was once again the section called heavy ground. As LOVE and being IN LOVE, was, is, a new forum to me, I had begun to believe I may be heading for the basket in the near future. So I was relieved to read:
Passion rules - sexual attraction overwhelms the both of you. If the sex is dizzying, then you want to live with this kind of vertigo forever.
Since exclusivity keeps the relationship intimate and on heavy ground, be aware, clear your head, and try to confront serious issues. You'll have a very hard time doing this because heavy ground is the only time a woman's mind and body separate. You want and need to be touched and are not thinking. You crave to be held and are becoming addicted to his body.
The measure of emotion is more intense with this man. Separation makes you scared. You worry when he is out of your sight and fear he may not return. Daily separation feels like abandonment. There is a dependancy that you feel. This is the time you should retain your independence, but it's hard for many women to do because they lack the confidence in themselves.
The one critism I have on this segment is the suggestion that only if you are in a heavy sexual relationship can you feel this. That is not so. In fact, the truth is, you can feel this way more intensely if your relationship has yet to be consumated and you have been deeply in love for a long period of time, say two years! A soul connection is this way from the onset, however, it moves slower and more thoughtfully toward sexual gratification. The intention being, mind, body and spirit. Deferred gratification or, deprivation, intensifies the desire for both male and female alike.
Nevertheless, wise words, well constructed and worth the money.
Willing to do the work.......2000-09-30
I like this book. I agree with the others who say that the first part is worth the price of the book and the contribution by Gail Parent could have been left out.
I am using this book to reinforce what I do well and raise my skills in other areas. I have used the little exercises (fill in the blanks, etc.) to learn more about myself. I have used the affirmations when I felt down and I am starting to see that they work! I used to worry that I would not meet someone with whom I could have a "healthy" relationship. Lately, I worry less about that and I expend more energy in becoming healthier myself. What that boils down to is accepting the truths; some painful but some reassuring. For example, feeling needy. I never really wanted to admit that I felt needy at times, but now I realize what an advantage I have if I can simply observe it and decide how to handle myself. I have read the book through my tears once or twice. I have actually chosen to "be my own best friend" when that was the right thing to do. I'm feeling pretty optimistic these days. My current relationship is going well and if it folds, I'll be that much better for the next one. This book covers every area of relationships and I find it to be a solid handbook (owner's manual, if you will) for all this relationship stuff.
I don't like Gail Parent.......2000-03-30
Ok, I do like the book. But I admit, I really don't like the second half of the book. I mean, hello, the lady doesn't even know what she's talking about. Talk about Hogwash.
The first half of the book is worth the price of the book. They should get another author to rewrite the second half of the book and redistribute the book again.
Very Insightful.......2000-02-10
This is a book I always seem to go back to again and again. It really has helped me focus on my strengths and keeping my independence in my relationships. I recommend it for any woman, whether single or in a relationship.

Customer Reviews:
Not a bad book for the casual chef.......2006-11-10
As a veteran food service professional and a devotee of the Food Lover's Companion i expected a little bit more from this book. It's full of fantastic tips and tricks, many known only in the food service industry, but i would be hard pressed to see this used as a reference book. It's interesting light reading. I expected more food science and chemistry and less 'Hints from Heloise'. The author's reliance on non-stick aerosol spray oil is a little unnerving.
It will certainly find a place in my chef's office, but more for the intersting tidbits of knowledge regarding beets than anything else.
Much of this information would be useful for the casual cook, but it lacks the 'must-have' draw of the Food Lover's Companion.
Always Find What I Want To Know.......2005-07-21
I got this book for a present about six months ago and can't stop picking it up. I heard this author on the radio recently and she was just as engaging and informative talking about burgers as she was about wine-and all the info she discussed is in this book, so I figure it's a darn good deal.
I've been cooking for a long time, but keep finding great info in The Food Lover's Tiptionary-whether for everyday cooking techniques (such as for subjects like corn, eggs, potatoes, tomatoes, etc.) or for tips for special event preparations (like how to handle caviar, or different ways to prepare risotto). There's even info on kitchenware and appliances-from knives to food processors.
Love the "tidbits" at the beginning of almost every listing-little informational "bites" (history, etymology, etc.) that add so much to the subject. In short, LOVE this handy, easy-to-read, exceedingly informative book!
Tips and Techniques to Boost Basic Cooking Skills........2004-11-05
"The Food Lover's Tiptionary" is a collection of tips and techniques on basic culinary subjects, organized alphabetically. I believe there are about 500 separate entries, but the book doesn't say. The 6,000 tips referred to on the book's cover fall under the entries. The book covers specific foods, general food categories, kitchen utensils, and culinary techniques. Food entries are presented in the following format: Tidbit (either a definition or food trivia), Purchasing, Equivalents, Storing, Preparing, Cooking, and/or Using. Some of the food entries are accompanied by short recipes. The formats of other types of entries vary, and may be best described by example: The entry for "Cookies" provides extensive instructions on making dough, preparing pans, baking, finishing, and storing. "Ice" gives general information and instructions for various ice cubes for different occasions. "Baked Goods" includes general baking tips. "Pasta Shapes" describes 65 shapes. Food quotes by recognizable names are scattered throughout the book, wherever the subject of the quote is found. There are several charts in the book, such as metric conversion, oven temperature equivalents, and pan sizes. And there is a Recipe Index in the back, for the over 100 short recipes found throughout the book.
Every cook could learn something from the "Tiptionary", but I think beginning or moderately experienced cooks will find it most useful. The subjects, themselves, are pretty basic. "Gourmet" subjects are few, and ethnic foods not at all. The entries are thorough, though, and would be helpful to an experienced chef if he/she doesn't happen to have experience with a particular food that is included. The emphasis is on instruction in "The Food Lover's Tiptionary", whereas the author's popular "Food Lover's Companion" emphasizes definitions. The "Food Lover's Companion" describes nearly 6,000 culinary terms -ethnic, gourmet, and obscure included.
Thanks again, Sharon Tyler Herbst.......2004-09-21
I've long been a fan of Sharon Tyler Herbst's books (have "The Ultimate A to Z Bar Guide," the "New Food Lover's Companion, the "Wine Lover's Companion" and "The Ultimate Guide to Pitcher Drinks"). So, when I recently received the new edition of her "Tiptionary" I eagerly started thumbing through it. This one's absolutely fabulous, and is also arranged in an easy A to Z format, which is one of the reasons I like this author's books so much! My new hubby's a hamburger fanatic (I'll convert him, yet;) so imagine my delight when I found over two pages of info on the subject. Now I cook his burgers just the way he likes them. Of course, I've found oodles of other subjects that make ME happy, like corn. The "Tiptionary" gave me dozens of hints on how to buy, store and cook it, and it has a super recipe for "Grilled Corn Off the Cob," which my spouse loves! And that brings me to another favorite feature of this book--it has dozens of short recipes scattered throughout. Not to mention that it tells you what to do with leftovers of whatever food you're looking up. Add to that loads of charts (temperature, measurements, pan sizes, pasta sizes, etc.), and you've got a book that every cook should have. Thank you, Sharon Tyler Herbst, for another great one!
Everything I wanted to know and more.......2004-08-12
Well, this book is certainly a winner. I LOVE to cook and know a lot about the subject, but a friend gave this to me for my birthday and I can't stop reading it. It's the little things that count for me, like information on pan substitutions (different sizes that will work for a pan you don't have) and temperature and measurement charts, and a pasta glossary. And I love the fabulous tips on all the foods. For instance, corn and tomato season is coming up and I've been buying a lot. This book gives me all kinds of tips on how to buy, store and prepare them, not to mention what to do with leftovers! I even learned how to make a juicier, more tender and less caloric hamburger. And I finally learned how to handle my microwave oven, which has been sitting unused for months. Need I say more? I LOVE THIS BOOK, and I think most people will, too.

Customer Reviews:
wonderful stories.......2007-06-23
My 10 year-old son tried reading it,and thought the stories were too sad, but I adore this book. Very sweet, humbling stories about good people and good animals.
The Healing Kind of Savior, Cat-like........2006-06-11
In this volume, Mr. Canfield and crew have compiled a smorgasboard selection of short stories about pets who fortify us and make life bearable. Especially poignant to me was "the medicine cat" as I, too, had one named Tosca. She gave up the ghost a few months ago at the age of eighteen years, as I had no way to get to her when she needed support of the kind she gave to me several years ago. They recognize the special love and devotion of animals to bless our hearts and homes.
"Cat lovers will tell you that felines are 'poetry in motion,' living sculptures at rest, and that the warm weight of a purring cat...is a surefire cure for all that ails you."
It is the physical acts of love to bring the gift of life as expressed in "The Healing Touch." I cried as I read "The Language of the Heart" about an unusual rabbit and his healing the hurt of a little girl who'd turned inward and no longer could talk. Something had died in that child which this loving rabbit cured. His innocence and trust had rekindled the same qualities in the child. The loving presence of an animal can heal where words have no effect. Alas, Roger Rabbit bit the tip off my little finger one day, which led me to the ER for a Saran-wrap bandage (to stop the bleeding -- a bandaid wouldn't work) and a tetanus shot. Needless to say, I found him another home.
"A small gesture -- the insistent tap of a cat's paw" about Jack, an adopted stray kitten (like Dante in Troy, Alabama), who grew into Ellen's savior. He woke her from a daydream of tragedy; Star woke me up with that same gesture over and over so that I would not strangle from Acid Reflux. Pets do love and care for their owners. This volume is one I will treasure for years to come. It is full of memories about pet owners' animals, not just cats and dogs.
Awesome.......2006-03-10
I really enjoyed this book. The main reason I liked it is because it is all about cats and dogs, and I am a hardcore animal lover. Another reason I liked it is because the stories are not made up in someone's mind. These stories are real stories that real people lived through. The last reason I liked this book so much is because you don't have to read it like an ordinary book. You can read it like I did and just jump around to stories that sound good to you, instead of reading the book cover to cover.

Even if you aren't a big reader of the "Chicken Soup" series, you will still like this book. The stories are great and you can just pick the book up anytime and pretty much read a section at random. Fun to keep on the coffee table, or as a gift book for animal lovers.

Perhaps the most famous of Lawrence's novels, the 1928 Lady Chatterley's Lover is no longer distinguished for the once-shockingly explicit treatment of its subject matter--the adulterous affair between a sexually unfulfilled upper-class married woman and the game keeper who works for the estate owned by her wheelchaired husband. Now that we're used to reading about sex, and seeing it in the movies, it's apparent that the novel is memorable for better reasons: namely, that Lawrence was a masterful and lyrical writer, whose story takes us bodily into the world of its characters.
Book Description
This edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover (and A Propos of `Lady Chatterley's Lover') newly establishes the text of D.H. Lawrence's most famous novel by peeling off the layers of typists' corruptions and compositors' errors that have seriously marred the novel for over sixty years. It is the first edition to restore to Lawrence's text the words he wrote, and the first to correct authoritatively the 1928 Florence edition that Lawrence personally supervised. The introduction establishes an accurate history of composition, publication and reception; the notes identify difficult allusions; and the appendix explains how Lawrence weaves real places and people into his fictional tapestry.

Ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically. The cataclysm has happened, we are among the ruins, we start to build up new little habitats, to have new little hopes. It is rather hard work: there is now no smooth road into the future: but we go round, or scramble over the obstacles. We've got to live, no matter how many skies have fallen.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully descriptive.......2007-05-14
A wonderful read, that explores human relationships. It is wonderfully descriptive and a pleasure to read. Highly recommend.
Read Anna Karenina by Tolstoy instead........2007-03-22
I love the classics- I make sure to throw a few into my "to be read" pile just to cleanse the palette from my general fiction and genre reading. I've been wanting to read LCL for some time now, mostly because of it being censored and banned back in the day for it's explicit sex and language. In fact it was considered pornographic and, for a time, was not allowed to be mailed out into the US due to obscenity laws.
Because I do read romance and yes, even erotica, at times I have to defend my reading choices because it's considered illicit, so naturally I wanted to read LCL.
Ugh. I hated it.
Slow paced and tedious I wanted to give up on it so many times. But I'm stubborn so I couldn't let myself give up on it.
Whereas I'm sure this book was a shocker in the late 20's when it was published, to my modern eyes, it was no biggie. Yes it was graphic, but in no way could one consider this pornographic! Porn, to me, is something that is produced (visual or written) to enflame sexually. This book was far from stimulating in that way.
The first section bored me to tears, full of mind-numbing conversations that had no significance other than for the author to show how intellectual he was. I could barely read a page without my eyes drooping closed. Yes, I got that their conversations had a point- "The dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation." Yeah, I got it. But to stretch it out for the length of the entire book? Ugh.
When Lady Chatterley met Mellors, her soon to be lover- things got more interesting- for about 10 pages. Then back to the tedium. It back and forthed like that for the entire book. UGH!
I truly liked her lover Mellors. A vetern of the war and of the lower class, he seemed the most intelligent of the characters. Which was, of course, the most shocking part of the story back in the day- the fact that a member of the upper class, Lady Chatterley, cheated on her upper crust husband with a servant.
Connie (Lady Chatterley) I found wishy-washy, whiney, and downright annoying. NOT a heroine to love. BUT she knew how to find her sexual pleasure and wasn't ashamed of it. (Plus for her!) Clifford, her husband- Lord Chatterley to her Lady- I actually felt pity for, though the author did his best to make him seem unworthy of Connie.
Here's a short look at Lord and Lady Chatterley:
Cliffy, wounded and crippled during the war, was unable to perform his husbandly duties. Connie grew to loathe him and headed out for greener pastures. Now, I'll give that Cliffy was a snob and a control freak, but pitiful to be sure, and in the end didn't deserve Connie's selfishness.

... however, I am glad I read LCL. If only to say I have done so!
It's all about the industrial takeover.......2007-01-10
Although this book has a saucy reputation, it's not all about sex. It is a rather dreary look at early 20th century England. Worthy of your time, and the brassy language could still make a school girl blush.
The Antidote to Platonic Love.......2006-11-07
Constance Chatterley's gamekeeper, Mellors, brings out the animal in Her Ladyship, and he extends the protection to her that he does to all the wild game in the wood. It is Mellors himself who, in the end, understands that his own baronet, Sir Clifford, is the greatest threat to his most vulnerable charge. Constance's own father, Sir Malcolm, fails utterly to appreciate the situation when he refers to Mellors as the quintessential poacher himself. Sir Malcolm's mistake is that he, along with all of polite society, fails to recognize that humans are, in fact, animals, and that the thrill of conjugal intimacy unites us with all other fauna. We strayed from this notion long ago, with Plato extolling virtuous love, and referring to passions and desires as evil (Book IX of the Phaedrus).
Sir Clifford, who is impotent as a result of war injuries, suggests to his wife that she have a discrete affair in order to produce an heir to the estate. "I don't care who his father may be as long as he is a healthy man not below normal intelligence." His admonition that Connie be careful not to fall in love in the process foreshadows his tragedy. When we see the gamekeeper, Mellors, placing pheasant eggs into the nests of chickens, in order that they may be reared by surrogate hens, we know, before any of the protagonists themselves, just who Lady Chatterley's surrogate husband will be. Ultimately Connie discovers that Mellors has that rarest of qualities in a man; he enjoys making love only when his partner enjoys it, too. These feelings are a sharp contrast with her experience as well as his, and they are both immediately ensnared in a tense carnal conspiracy.
In the process, we are treated to D. H. Lawrence's craft:
"Both sisters mixed with...the young Cambridge group, the group that stood for 'freedom' and flannel trousers, and soft shirts open at the neck, and a well-bred sort of emotional anarchy..., and an ultra-sensitive sort of manner."
Tevershall village had "rows of wretched, small begrimed brick houses with black slate roofs for lids, sharp angles, and willful blank dreariness."
One attraction of her first lover, Michalis, is that he had his own ideas and stated them clearly; "he didn't merely walk round them with millions of words, in the parade of the life of the mind."
Sir Clifford "seemed alert in the foreground, but the background was like the Midlands atmosphere, haze, smoky mist."
Before her affair with Mellors, Connie saw sex as "just a cocktail term for an excitement that bucked you up for a while, then left you more raggy than ever."
Connie realizes of Clifford that, "like many insane people, his insanity might be measured by the things he was not aware of: the great desert tracts in his consciousness."
"She saw her own nakedness in his eyes..."
This book will not titillate the reader of 2006 as it did the reader of 1928. The reaction against it then exposed both widespread hypocrisy and a scientifically illiterate, pre-Kinsey society which extolled Platonic values, and in the process denied the incomparable delight of primitive intimacy.
A treasure beyond time........2006-11-04
It is almost unbelievable, how this book could ever have raised a scandal, whereas it deals with love in a most human and indeed loving way. This tells us more about earlier readers than about the author. Everybody who is able to abandon the carthesian beliefs that ruined pleasure in enjoying life in the flesh as well as in the spirit will enjoy this masterpiece of literature.

Customer Reviews:
A must read for all men!.......2007-01-09
This is one of the best technical manuals that detail the intricacies of sexual pleasure. It effectively addresses the methods of pleasing women, who are complicated by nature. It also focuses on the entire environment that impacts a couple's receptiveness to experiencing sexual intimacy by providing tools to increase and facilitate communication. Each time I loan this book to friends, it is NEVER returned! That is the most significant statement I can make about what others think about its content!
Useful and informative, review by personal growth coach.......2006-10-21
I have a good background in biology, psychology and biochemistry. I do public speaking on a variety of topics and personal growth coaching in several areas including human sexuality. I have read a lot of books in my areas of expertise and many of these have been in the areas of evolutionary psychology, sexuality and relationship. Some of these have been academic and others have been of a lighter nature.
This book fits into the category of a light read on a topic that is important to everyone i.e. sexual satisfaction and achieving satisfying orgasms. While I found that this book had some exaggerated claims, it also had a lot of good information that was well presented.
This book is particularly useful for women who have difficulty achieving orgasm, but it is interesting for me as well. It really does include a lot of good tips for making your orgasms more powerful. However, it doesn't focus much on the intimacy aspects of relationship.
I personally believe that the biggest aphrodisiac is genuine love, compassion and high regard for our partner. As long as this book does not become an end in itself or a substitute for intimacy, I think you will find it useful and informative.
Lubricants.......2005-10-11
The one thing that I came away with in this book, that was very useful, was "Albolene". It is absolutely the finest lubricant in the world. Get the unscented kind as suggested in the book. The rest of the book, is indeed, really only good for women. But Albolene is great for everyone! Get it from your local store.
Male Readers Beware: ESO is for Women Only.......2004-02-20
As the other reviewers implicitly note, with comments such as:
"I have used it on past girlfriends and taken them to places they didn't know their own bodies could take them. Complete loss of time and place while wave after wave of deep slow contractions went on for 1-2 or more hours. I've given it as a gift to some of my male friends and they had the same results with their wives/girlfriends."
This book, which devotes EQUAL attention to female and male extended orgasm is playing a cruel joke on men because, unless a man has the control of a zen master (read between the lines of this book), he WILL NEVER experience extended sexual orgasm. The book ups the ante for men -- once again, we have to work harder and harder to please women as they scale their orgasmic Olympuses, experiencing mind-blowing delights that men cannot experience. I have NEVER met a man who actually experienced true ESO.
After reading this book, a male reader is left with the depressing feeling that sexually speaking it sucks being a man: NO true multiple orgasms, always "holding back," no extended orgasms, orgasms that grow weaker with age, etc.
Please Drs. Brauers, tell the truth: What is the ratio of women versus men achieving ESO, 1,000:1?
Talk about performance pressure!.......2002-08-01
It's basically those Kregel exercises and a lot of masturbation. Exercises include things like lifting a towel with your erection. It implies that unless you are having orgasms that last over an hour, you're really missing out on something. No doubt that would be great, but life is more than just orgasms. Yes, no orgasms would be sad, but I'll take a fulfilled life with normal orgasms (they aren't that bad, believe me) over a life obsessed with having some sort of hour-long fantasy orgasm. Because the level of training required to achieve their recommended orgasm is equal to training for an Olympic event.

Book Description
On an October evening in South Pasadena, a horrifying wave of flame swept through a large home improvement center, snuffing out the lives of four innocent people, including a two-year-old boy. Firefighters rushed to the scene, even as a pair of equally suspicious fires broke out in two nearby stores. Silently watching the raging inferno in the midst of the heat, smoke, and chaos was a man respected as one of California's foremost arson investigators, a captain in the Glendale Fire Department ...
From Joseph Wambaugh, the critically acclaimed, nationally bestselling author of The Onion Field, comes the astonishing true story of a nightmarish obsession -- and the hunt for a brilliant psychopath who lived a double life filled with professional tributes and terrifying secrets.
Customer Reviews:
Fire Lover fascinating............2007-04-05
Nobody does non-fiction crime reporting like Joe Wambaugh. Like The Onion Field and The Blooding, this is a non-stop read. Wambaugh's insight into human behavior and motivations is fascinating. Joe Wambaugh is an american treasure.
Fire Lover.......2007-04-04
Even though you know how the true story ends it is a page turner. The arsonist's mind is beyond comprehension. Wambaugh does a great job with this account.
TMI.......2007-03-18
Too much information. The story line gets bogged down and lost in Wambaugh's microscopic details. Too bad. Could've been an interesting read.
exciting true crime!.......2006-12-20
"Fire Lover" is an very exciting and well-written true crime book by Joseph Wambaugh, the author famous for writing "The Onion Field". The descriptions of fires, vehicle chases and other action sequences are so clear and thrilling you really feel like you are there. It drew me in from the very beginning, with an extremely realistic account of three simultaneous and deadly fires in Pasadena, California businesses on October 10, 1984. Clues eventually lead to arson investigator John Orr as the arsonist in these and a series of other fires. Orr, it turns out, was a legend in his own mind who used the fire investigation as the basis for a poorly written book. I was glad that Wambaugh did not neglect Orr's early life. I always want a true crime author to answer the question "why", and there was more information about Orr's background than I had expected. Fascination with fire is a big indication of psychopathology. I did a little skipping, though. Emphasis on the scenes inside the courtroom got a little tiresome. Well-written and very vivid, "Fire Lover" is by far one of the best true crime books I have ever read.
The fascination of the story is undermined by author's style.......2006-05-07
The story of the arson inspector who turns out to be a firebug is a true man-bites-dog story, one made more compelling by the betrayal of trust and life-and-death stakes. Unfortunately, the story pokes along, punctuated by Wambaugh's efforts to show how clever he is as a writer. Fire Lover does not compare well to The Onion Field, a spell-binding non-fiction work by the same author, but if you want the facts related to this case, this book provides them.

Book Description
Sometimes it can be difficult for even the closest of partners to fully express their love during sex. We may resist deeper intimacy for many reasons, among them pain, insecurity, or simply a fear of sharing our most natural desire for physical love with another person. Tantra can help you dissolve these barriers to intimacy, and invites you to awaken the physical and spiritual energy that can bring partners together as loving soul mates.
Tantric Love unlocks the secret powers of meditation, breathing, massage, and more to help you celebrate and revitalize your love life. Each chapter focuses on one of the chakras -- or energy centers -- in the body and offers simple exercises that will help you share this energy and open the door to ecstasy.
As you move from one stage to the next, you'll find that you're not only connecting with your lover on a physical level but on a deep spiritual level, too -- one that prepares you for a loving, lasting commitment to each other.
Customer Reviews:
Right on, man!.......2004-12-23
Some folks, those of the "more asian than thou" clan, have said that this book (in a nutshell) isn't "authentic" enough. This basically means that the book is too lucid and simple! These folks only put thier "seal of approval" on texts which make heavy use of Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Chinese terms, and delineate practices only through the spectrum of 5,000 year old Sutras. This is unfortunate, because this book is an excellent introduction to Tantra and the spiritual dimension of lovemaking.
I recommend this book for those of you who might be at an impasse with your spouse or might otherwise be struggling with your spirituality. Those who are "hung up" about sex might also find liberation in the book. My advice is to BUYU it, and make up your own mind.
For consenting adults only!
Terminology of eastern spritiual mysticism -- does it help?.......2004-12-16
One of the problems with well-meaning authors and reviewers alike who fill their thoughts with eastern spiritual terminology is that these concepts are necessarily personal and are, as a result, vague to meaningless when written to the general public. The authors speak as though it were obvious to everyone what is meant by such phrases as "White Sexual Magic", "the secret golden thread" (if it's a secret, how are they talking about it as though everyone knew the contents of that "secret"?), "Kundalini energy", etc... The end result is that it appears these authors want us to learn a whole different way of looking at the world, new concepts, and embrace a new terminology before we can even begin to understand how to engage in fantastic love-making. Rather than truly enlightening people, the insistence on using vague terms and encasing the whole thing in eastern mystical spirituality does more to confuse people and make the whole thing generally impractical.
Yes, love-making is so much more than the sexual act, but it doesn't help to start off by telling everyone how they've been led astray by western values and how the "eastern sages" really know best.
Excellent Choice for Begginers.......2002-10-01
As an avid Tantra reader and follower of Eastern philosophies I was delightfully surprised by the quality of the illustrations, pictures and approach to Tantra in this book. It is a must have for anyone remotely interested in this fantastic Art.
Tantra for everybody!.......2002-03-25
Excellent book, it's very clear and helpful. It's not only a book about sex, it's about life and its connection with the universe. If you like Tantra you should buy this book, you'll like it.
Reader from Whistler Canada.......2002-02-21
This book has much hidden depth and we found profound meditations.
We are a couple who married for the "wrong" reasons after knowing each other 3 weeks and now 4 years later have a son and a respectful and loving relationship. Tantra and recently this book have allowed love and a deep connection between us to flourish.
We are proof that soul mates can come about by concious exercises such as the ones in this wonderful book and not through the flimsy and romantic belief that there is "one" special person out there...

Creative creativity guidance.......2007-01-26
This book is delightful! As a lifelong creativity champion, the moment I saw it I knew I had to have it. Of all the books I've read on creativity, and there have been many, it's the most creatively written and formatted that I've found, providing not only valuable information on the creative process, but being itself a model and an inspiration as well. The author, Jill Badonsky, brilliantly presents creativity principles in a playful, engaging and interactive way, personified by fun and spirited muses. Being a former producer of training materials and a promoter of creative and interactive performance support strategies, I appreciate the concept of chunking bits of information into a sort of buffet of info nuggets that can be digested in either a linear or a non-linear fashion. This book offers such a buffet. It's chock full of metaphors, strategies, resources and exercises that provide a bountiful and delicious creativity experience. Whether you want to explore your creative potential, take your creating to a new level, or help others do the same, buy this book! You won't be disappointed.
This Book Truly Is A Gift.......2007-01-22
Several years ago, I browsed through "The Nine Modern Day Muses" in a bookstore and decided to buy a copy for myself. What a gift that turned out to be! Since that time, Jill Badonsky's book has made a wonderful gift for others. I have given copies to my sister; my boss; close friends; colleagues from my former life as an attorney; fellow writers, zydeco dancers, meditators, Buddhist practitioners.... Their response has been unanimous - every one of them loves the book.
"The Nine Modern Day Muses" is so much fun. The book is an easy read - Jill Badonsky's sense of humor is delightful, and her writing is light and playful. BUT don't let this fool you. "The Nine Modern Day Muses" is packed full of substance: powerful tools for igniting your creative spark and overcoming creative obstacles, fun but effective exercises for generating creative ideas, thought-provoking gems, and page after page of inspiration and encouragement. The book has been a tremendous hit with my creativity coaching clients and creativity group/workshop participants.
I highly recommend buying Jill Badonsky's book for yourself, your family and friends, and anyone else you know who wants to be more creative.

Sparking artistic transformation.......2007-01-17
Author and creative genius, Jill Badonsky, bestows a treasure chest of jewels to all who travel the pages of this book. Not only creative in its concept of re-invented Muses, which are delightfully applicable to modern-day creativity obstacles, this book sparkles with an uplifting feeling.
I use this book all the time as a creativity coach and artist. Each time I reread portions of the book, I find more Muse exercises that compel me to put the book down to actually do them, because they are so unusual, fun, and effective. I frequently do the "Frugal Extravagance" exercise to create options to replenish my artist spirit.
Want more compassion and patience with your own creative being as you run through multiple Ahas about the creative process? You will find it all here...
