Whether he is scoring documentaries about the Mob racket in the film industry or adding cues to animated movies, Beresford approaches his onscreen subjects with a broad spectrum of musical color and emotion. The 15-minute opening track, "Outside In," sets the tone for what the listener can expect from the rest of the disc. Featuring musicians like Alexander Balanescu on violin, the track starts down-and-out in an after-hours dive bar and swiftly moves uptown to be coupled with sleazy tango, avant-salsa, and atmospheric string drones. This wild eclecticism is pulled off here and throughout the other 16 tracks without jump cuts among genres but instead with elegance and refinement in the hands of a sonic sculptor. --Michael Woodring
