From Jazziz
Recorded while its namesake battered the eastern seaboard, Hurricane Floyd preserves for posterity a live date wherein a storm of a different kind raged inside the Old Cambridge Baptist Church.
Thurston Moore's day job as guitarist and singer for alternative rock icons Sonic Youth has always overshadowed his work in New York's Downtown jazz scene, but Moore's been at it for more than a decade now. The guitarist's unorthodox style avoids proper chords and linear solos in favor of an arsenal of clicks, squeals, and cacophonous walls of sound. Here he is well-matched by his two partners.
Alto saxophonist Shoup, who hails from Seattle, isn't on the radarscope for many jazz folk, but should be. He weds the surging energy of Peter Brötzmann to the staccato clucks of John Zorn. Shoup is remarkably at home playing alongside Moore's alien soundtrack, responding to the guitarist's abrasive textures with an equally intense sound of his own. Percussionist Makihara makes some interesting choices, often playing counterpoint to the mayhem of the others with understated playing, sometimes employing brushes and hand percussion.
As a sort of footnote (though stuck in the middle), Moore plays a brief solo acoustic guitar piece. It's something he's been doing frequently of late, and serves as a brief respite from the three long pieces by the trio. Otherwise, this ecstatic set hits as hard as its title implies.
