Product Description
RECKLESS DC MUSIC is proud to announce its fourth release, THE ART OF TRIO, featuring bassist David Chevan and pianist Rex Cadwallader with five of the most extraordinary artists currently living in Connecticut. The title of the album comes from a concert series that Chevan and Cadwallader have been hosting for the past two years at the Milford Fine Arts Center and the Clinton Town Hall. For this album Chevan and Cadwallader invited five artists from the series to join them in the studio. Each artist brought two pieces with them. The result is a joyously eclectic mix of styles and musical approaches that gives the listener not only a sense of the Art of Trio concert series, but a window into the contemporary jazz scene of Connecticut.
Flutist Ali Ryerson brings a classical veneer and shines on Thad Jones' "A Child is Born" and Joe Henderson's Latin infused composition, "Recordame". Vocalist extraordinaire, Giacomo Gates sings two original compositions, the first, his own "Waiting" is a cool blues and the second, "My Heart is on the Low Down," was written by another Connecticut native, Artt Frank, a multi-talented drummer and former Chet Baker sideman. The GRAMMY award winning Dobro master, Stacy Phillips brings his bluegrass influenced approach to Sonny Rollins' "Doxy" and gives a heart wrenching interpretation to the classic torch ballad, "You Don't Know What Love Is". Multi-instrumentalist Jim Fryer gives a tour-de-force performance on his tracks, playing trombone, euphonium, and cornet on a rendition of "For No Reason at All in C," a rarely recorded Bix Beiderbecke and Frankie Trumbauer composition. There are no overdubs on this or any other track on the CD, Jim just kept picking up the instruments a! s he needed them. His trombone and cornet playing on Duke Ellington's "Creole Love Call" is just as hot and also gives Rex and David a chance to show off their blues stylings. Finally, Tim Moran, one of the most versatile saxophonists in the state, kicks off and concludes the CD with two tunes that show why he's one of the most in- demand sidemen in Connecticut. His "Blues for Bu", an original blues line, blisters with raw energy from beginning to end and he brings all of his emotions to bear on a powerful rendition of the Sam Rivers composition, "Beatrice".
This recording represents a new phase in the collaborative work between David Chevan and Rex Cadwallader. For one, the nature of this projects allows them to show off their ability to move fluidly through a number of different jazz styles and settings. For another, it marks an expansion of their approach to spontaneous musical dialogue that was first documented on their CD, Repartee (Stanza USA, SCD-0040, available here at amazon.com). This approach, while hardly unique to these two individuals places an equal emphasis on virtuosity and being true to the spirit of the piece. These two elements can clearly be heard working hand-in-hand on The Art of Trio.
