What We Live Fo(u)r

With this debut CD from collective improvising trio What We Live, the group and recording leverage the combination of ROVA sax quartet's Larry Ochs, a hoarse-blowing and inventive tenor and sopranino virtuoso; bassist Lisle Ellis, an eruptive, passionate free-jazz player; and Donald Robinson, a drummer who earned his musical wings in the crucible of 1960s-era energy music. Ochs can make long, seamless lines and then burn up the tones that he rasps and scuttles on either his wide-berth tenor or incisive sopranino. Ellis pummels and pencil-draws rhythms that spring and dance and shout, and Robinson often walks and taps lightly but packs thunderous drummerly heat, as well. The tunes are largely improvised and reveal exceptionally deep listening and interplay. --Andrew Bartlett
