Ari Brown is Chicago's best-kept jazz secret. A powerful and inventive musician who is skilled on both tenor and alto saxophone, Brown has backed many of the city's avant-garde leaders, including Lester Bowie and Anthony Braxton. On his second release as a leader, Brown takes a giant step forward with eight dramatic performances. Accompanied by his brother Kirk on piano, Josef Ben Israel on bass, and Avreeayl Ra on drums, Brown strikes a balance between straight-ahead blowing, evocative ballads, and a more "outside" musical vocabulary. On the album's tour-de-force, "Rahsaan in the Serengeti," Brown pays high tribute to the late Roland Kirk by playing alto and tenor simultaneously, with compelling results. If Ari Brown keeps this up, he won't be a secret much longer. --Mitch Myers
