Editorial Reviews
Cadence Review
"Looking In is a fine little gem of a recording, a true find. Introspective and rhapsodic on the thematic statements, harmonically sophisticated and daringly angular in the central variations, Denny brings a very interesting ear and a monster technique to this collection of standards, crossed by a single self-penned composition. Mike Denny is a fine, and obviously underrated player. Recommended for all romantics, impressionists and dedicated followers of (un)fashionably intense invention."
Critic-At-Large Fred Crafts, former Jazz Editor of the Los Angeles Times
Denny's elegant musical ideas and astounding technical proficiency have put him among the elite in the resurgent Pacific Northwest jazz scene. Celebrated throughout the region, he resides in Eugene, where his guitar addresses his audience directly. Mike Denny was born in Los Angeles, grew up in Eugene, received a BA in music history from the City College of New York (1992) and an MA in music history at the University of Oregon (1995). Along the way have been periods in Denver, Portland and New York City. Surprisingly, Denny's primary jazz influences are not guitarists but pianists like Bill Evans, Art Tatum, Erroll Garner and Thelonious Monk. But he is an eclectic student, and his playing also exhibits evidence of guitarists Jim Hall, Johnny Smith, Kenny Burrell, Ralph Towner, Barney Kessell and Django Reinhardt, as well as the classical composers Prokofiev, Brahms, Schoenberg, Debussy and Chopin. Whole tone scales, blistering arpeggios, unusual chord voicings and s! himmering improvisations characterize his classy playing.
