Editorial Reviews
Mitch Genova, Detroit Jazz, March/April 1988
"Carl's playing, like his writing, can be described as mainstream with an edge. However, it is never a harsh edge. His sound never grates, and his ideas never cause a flinch. The edge is in the unexpected directions he takes that nevertheless grow out of what proceeded, in a quirky, often whimsical way. His playing often raises a sly smile, and his compositions, even when sometimes angular, are catchy and singable."
Product Description
This CD features Michael Graye (Alto Sax), Tim Flood (Acoustic Bass) and Gerald Cleaver (Drums) performing compositions by Carl Michel (Guitar). The album explores the many styles of jazz starting out with the up tempo "jump" tune "Big Daddy," followed by a slow drag composition, "Old House." The CD then moves on to a Latin piece, "Warm." The next tune, "Gray Day," is a jazz waltz. "Okefenokee" is a "funky boogaloo" followed by "Bookablue," which is a blues in 3/4 time. "Whatever Blues" is a bop blues and "Traveler" is a folk tune. Recorded in Detroit, July and August, 1997.
