Volume 1: The Book of Norman

Aside from the rather hokey name of this band (and the album, for that matter), this project is a lesson on how to produce an indie jazz CD correctly. First, of course, you must have the tunes and the chops. Abby and Norm (a husband and wife team who are both assistant professors at the Berklee School of Music in Boston) have both. Composed of crisp, well-recorded tunes, The Book of Norman features fluid guitar playing (especially on a nice, up-tempo version of Coltrane's "Giant Steps") set amidst solid backing from drums, piano and bass. With guest sax spots from George Garzone (another Berklee prof) and liner notes from John Abercrombie (yet another Berklee alum), The Book of Norman is an ambitious, energetic, well-executed offering. --S. Product Description
"Volume 1: The Book of Norman" is a jazz recording that speaks truthfully to the jazz, rock, or blues lover; player and listener alike. Abby and Norm Group is a jazz guitar oriented quartet - guitar, acoustic piano, bass anddrums - joined for two cuts by tenor saxophone master George Garzone. This recording, produced with care by Abby and Norm, and mastered by Wayne Wadhams, features Norm's compositions, so grounded in traditional strengths that one could swear each tune was an old great that somehow, has not yet been heard; yet utterly modern, and a completely individual statement. The tunes and the playing as deep and complex as good jazz, yet as simple and enjoyable as great jazz.
