About the Artist
Mark Griffith is a busy drummer living in the New York area. He was born and raised in Southern New Jersey a "drumsticks throw" from Philadelphia. He graduated from the prestigous jazz program at William Patterson College in Northern New Jersey, under the tutelege of bassist Rufus Reid. As well as being a popular drummer on the jazz scene, he is also an eductaor, jazz historian, and writer for many of the top drum magazines including Modern Drummer, Stick It!, and Batteur. He has worked with the Spirit Of Life Ensemble, trumpeters John Swana and Ted Curson, guitarists Eric Johnson and Kevin Eubanks, and saxophonists Gary Thomas and Bob Ackerman. His debut cd, Drumatic, is the first recording ever that exclusively utilizes the compositions of great jazz drummer/composers.
Product Description
Bluejay Records is a jazz label rooted in the soulful blues and swing tradition of the past, now updated for the new Millennium. Our initial musical emphasis on the groove oriented organ group is represented by our three initial releases: Nat Simpkins' " Spare Ribs," Eric Johnson's "Makin Whoopie," and Dave Braham's "Blue Gardenia." As Dave McElfresh wrote in Cadence: "Nothing should embarrass the big, production-heavy labels more than seeing small labels such as this one turn out such unmatched, contemporary soul funk on a shoestring." We fully intend to produce jazz of varying genres. Although the more accessible styles are our primary interest, we will cross into unconventional areas as well.
