Jelly Roll Stomp
Editorial Reviews
From the Label
Composer and pianist Jelly Roll Morton is considered one of the "first great jazz composers." He spent his teens playing the piano in brothels, bars, and bordellos and performing in vaudeville shows. After he began to achieve some success in the early-1920s, he cut piano rolls of his songs. (Piano rolls are simply a very mechanical way of "recording" music in which notes are hole-punched into thick paper and then played back on a player piano.) This CD contains 12 solo piano rolls from 1923-1924 and includes some of his most famous songs ("King Porter Stomp," "Shreveport Stomp"), as well as a couple of rarer performances ("Sweet Man," "Tin Roof Blues").
