From Jazziz
More than any other instrumental combination in jazz, the two-tenor-saxophone front line signals a competitive venture based on one-upmanship. The sparring tactics of Dexter Gordon vs. Wardell Gray and of Sonny Stitt vs. Gene Ammons were exemplary, but this release by two veterans of the Chicago scene is different. although these gentlemen play the same horn, their styles could not be more distinct; hence, the nullification of any real competition. Von Freeman - with serpentine lines grounded in smooth, legato phrasing - eloquently and naturally plays foil to Petersen's big and burly, gruffly articulate approach. Yet never does the listener get the feeling that either player is trying to outdo the other. Using a repertoire of classic blowing tunes (Mr. P.C., Four, Lover Man, A Night in Tunisia, and Lover) and a swinging rhythm section of pianist Willie Pickens, bassist Brian Sandstron, and drummer Robert Shy, this quintet works some serious grooves. Trading choruses, then phrases of eights and fours, the two tenors forge a trail that's traditionally rooted yet stylistically individual.
