Resurrection, Pt. 2

Despite its title, this is not really a collection of "Improvised Music Works." There is improvisation, to be sure, but first and foremost this is an anthology of works on vaunted producer and mogul Stefan Winter's distinctive Winter & Winter record label. The artists are all topnotch improvisers, from trumpeter Dave Douglas to drummer Paul Motian, pianist Uri Caine, cellist Ernst Reijseger, and guitarist Noel Akchoté. And the selections all originate on Winter & Winter CDs, but as an anthology, they hold together very well, flowing one to another in an unforced, musically inquisitive manner. You begin with a Charles Mingus tune, head into an Ornette Coleman melody mangled smartly by Akchoté and Marc Ribot, and then head into chamber clouds from Douglas, great piano flashes from Caine, and much more. This will make you want more of the label's selections--and it'll play well in any jazz listener's rotation. --Andrew Bartlett
