R 'N' Browne
Editorial Reviews
From Jazziz
After his recent straightahead record, "Another Shade of Browne," trumpeter Tom Browne returns to the funky R&B he is best-known for with "R'n'Browne." Still, Browne solos all over the new disc with eyebrow-raising authority, combining a crackling fire reminiscent of Lee Morgan with Miles Davis' architecture.
There's no faulting Browne's taste in composers, either, on this tribute to some of R&B's modern classics. Roy Ayers is represented by "Can't You See Me" (one of two tracks featuring Christian McBride on electric bass), while James Mtume's "Juicy Fruit" doubles the pleasure with its sexy, come-hither groove. Frankie Beverly's "Joy and Pain" benefits from producer/arranger Bob Belden's sophisticated, quirky harmonies on keyboards, and Chieli Minucci offers a beautiful acoustic-guitar solo on the tender "Un-Break My Heart."
While singers Sybil, Stephanie McKay, and Hank Bones deserve special mention for outstanding work on their respective tracks, top honors in the song category go to two very different stylists. Backed by an elegant horn section, Dianne Reeves gives a vibrant interpretation of Donny Hathaway's "Someday We'll All Be Free," and rapper KCB puts across Jimi Hendrix's classic ballad, "The Wind Cries Mary," with irresistible élan, while Browne runs the voodoo down on electric trumpet.
