About the Artist
Born and raised in the south valley barrio of

Albuquerque, New Mexico, trombonist

composer Rick Davies had an early exposure to

both jazz and Latin music. He began his study of

trombone at age ten and began composing jazz

and classical music in high school. After

graduating from the University of New Mexico,

Davies started performing and recording

professionally with a variety of southwestern

rhythm and blues and Tex-Mex bands that toured

throughout North America.

Since relocating to New York City, he has

performed in a myriad of musical contexts. His

credits include Blondie, Michael Jackson, Gloria

Gaynor, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Cloonie, and

Rafael at Carnegie Hall. Davies has performed

extensively in commercial music and on the club

date circuit in NY and has maintained close ties

to the Big Apple Circus.

In the 1980's he began a long association with

Jackie Byard and performed on the Phantasies II

recording. On the Afro-Carribean and Latin jazz

scenes, he has performed with Tito Puente,

Johnny Colon, Charlie Palmieri, Marc Anthony,

Skah Shah, Ti Manno, Tobou Combo, Arrow,

Rey Reyes, Johnny Ray, and Manny Oquendo's

Libre to name a few. Venues in which Davies has

performed include: the Blue Note, Birdland,

Barry Harris' Jazz Culture Theater, the Latin

Quarter, the Copacabana, Lincoln Center in

NYC and Jazz Alley in Washington DC. For the

last Decade , he has been the musical director of

Wayne Gorbea's Salsa Picante, performing and

composing or arranging works for the group's

recordings including the band's most recent

release, the internationally acclaimed Cogele el

Gusto.
