Swing Low
Editorial Reviews
From Jazziz
Representing the ground floor of the saxophone high-rise, baritone player Claire Daly has put together a charming little date for Koch titled Swing Low. There are several bari-wielding musicians in action these days, yet it's still somewhat unusual for a mainstream disc to feature the horn. So Daly gets points for individualism almost by default. She stresses tone and texture over speed and thrust. But factor in the charm of her style - it's a discriminating manner of blowing that surrounds each note with a cushion of air - and you've got a cozy date with affable idiosyncrasies. On "I Thought About You" and "For All We Know," she sticks close to the melodies while still managing some pithy improvisations. A longtime member of Diva: No Man's Band, Daly has the sound of a section player stepping out - there's a tentativeness to some of her lines. But her limitations are bolstered by the general aplomb of her group, which features pianist Eli Yamin, bassist Dave Hofstra, and drummer Peter Grant. Her old Boston pal, saxophonist George Garzone, helps out on two cuts, turning "Little Old Lady" into a Caribbean pas de deux that conjures up Rollins' calypsos.
