Editorial Reviews
From Jazziz
Yes, every jamming live date must, for whatever unwritten reason, feature a tender, elongated ballad. If Gollehon's nine-minute flugelhorn feature, "Unchanged," were on another project, it would just be a somewhat-prolonged reading of a romantic gesture. Here, it causes an explosive, hard-groovin' ensemble date to come to a crashing halt.
But the good new is this is an explosive, hard-groovin' CD. With Gollehon's often staccato, usually manic trumpet and with saxophonist Ronnie Cuber forming a tough and gritty horn section, the ensemble swings heavy through Nat Adderley's "Sticks" and Lee Morgan's "Short Count." On the latter, the "Sidewinder"-type percussion groove lasts long enough for Cuber, Gollehon, and pianist John Hicks to get in some wild solos
Things get even better when jeff golub, smooth jazz's answer to eric clapton, shows up. His electric string blistering adds extra punch to the funky-blues grooves of Gollehon's "The Shocker" (which also features a playful exchange between Gollehon's high trumpet tones and Cuber's low sax honks) and gives extra edge to the rock-inspired half of this CD. This part of the disc comprises a bouncy cover of Jimi Hendrix's "May This Be Love" and a crisp, faithful reworking of "Sunshine of Your Love," where Gollehon's trumpet carries the melody, before taking a snappy solo that matches the electricity of Clapton's guitar lines on the original.
