About the Artist
Paul Austerlitz was born in Finland and grew up in New York City, immersed in jazz, salsa, and classical music, his life-long involvement with the bass clarinet began in college, where he played free jazz and developed a fascination for Asian, African, and Caribbean music. He played saxophone in New York City Latin bands after college, and then returned to academia and received the Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University in 1993.

Recorded in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the bulk of this CD finds Paul Austerlitz in dialogue with inspired Caribbean musicians such as pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and percussionist Julito Figueroa. The last two cuts were recorded in Detroit, Michigan, a city that breathes the African-American musical tradition.
