Hip Jazz Bop: This Is Your Brain

This excellent compilation of bebop jazz starts off with a bang. Sonny Stitt, on tenor sax, comes out of the chute wailing on "Night Work," followed by Freddie Hubbard's exultant trumpet on "Minor Mishap."
Judiciously curating the fertile vaults of the Black Lion label, the folks at Hip Jazz-Bop have put together a rich brew of classic jazz from the 1950s and '60s. Jazz giants like Dexter Gordon on "Doxy" and Thelonious Monk on "Trinkle Tinkle" give the CD weight and authenticity. Other major figures abound: Bud Powell struts his considerable stuff on "Hot House" and Duke Ellington weighs in with "Black and Tan Fantasy." Lesser, but no less brilliant, stars such as trumpeter Howard McGhee and bassist Oscar Pettiford add to the mix. McGhee's muted blues playing on "Shades of Blue," in particular, shines darkly. In addition, the colorful, neo-hipster packaging adds a patina of cool to the project, indicating an admirable desire to find a new audience for this golden era of jazz. --Wally Shoup
