Few trombonists were ever able to develop the intricacies of bop phrasing, but J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding both managed it with apparent ease. Johnson essentially wrote the book on bop trombone, playing with his rapid-fire, almost clipped phrasing, and Winding added new flexibility to the big-band trombone section through his work with Stan Kenton. While bop bands rarely had a trombone player, "Jay and Kay" were a popular quintet with a unique two-trombone front line. While two-tenor bands were relatively common, they usually depended on contrasting styles from the horns. With Jay and Kai, it's remarkable how similar their conceptions were, two fluent soloists of the first order. While Johnson's sound is slightly brassier and his emphasis more harmonic, Winding's warmer and more melodic, the two were able to mirror one another's inventions. Both skilled arrangers, they also brought distinctive touches to the ensembles for this 1955 Bethlehem recording, subtly reharmonizing standards in ways that add interest and surprising shadings to the midrange brass palette. Their regular pianist, Dick Katz, is an effective soloist as well, contributing some necessary contrast. The alternate takes added to the Rhino release include more-developed versions of "It's All Right with Me." --Stuart Broomer
