About the Artist
Dennis Finnegan took a circuitous path to singing and arranging jazz standards. His love for the guitar came first, and as a teenager on Long Island was expressed in the only way possible in that time and place, through playing in rock bands with other guys in leather jackets. The feeling that there must be more than this led him to study classical guitar, and ultimately to get a Masters degree in his instrument. He didnt go about this in a typical way, but focused on 20th century composers, particularly from Latin America, and studied composition and arranging in addition to performance.
His love for jazz and for singing finally surfaced after all this formal instruction, and he has dedicated the past several years to arranging and performing jazz standards, which has now culminated in the release of the CD, "starting from here".
Product Description
All of the songs on this CD are standards, but they're stripped of ostentation and sung in an unmannered style which uncovers the musical and emotional essence of the songs. Instead of the usual retro, nostalgic approach, the standards on this album employ modern harmonies, surprising arrangements, and the occasional oddity (accordion, for example), to make these old songs feel new again.
