For the Ears

This reissue is culled from three mid-1950s Vanguard Jazz Showcase albums by pianist Sir Charles Thompson, produced by the legendary John Hammond. Coleman Hawkins, jazz music's first great tenor saxophone soloist, is featured on only one of the sessions, but his commanding presence dominates the album, especially on the ballads "It's the Talk of the Town" and "Under the Sweetheart Tree." Thompson, whose light touch and easy swing recall a less reserved Count Basie, leads a mainstream sextet and a drummerless trio on the other sessions. While hardly essential listening, For the Ears is an enjoyable reminder of how Swing Era jazz veterans held their own in the brave new world of bebop. --Rick Mitchell
