Kenny Burrell's guitar work won't set you on fire, but it sure will keep you warm and cozy all night long. As a middle-of-the-road blues-and-bop player, Burrell has few equals. His playing is the epitome of balance and poise in the best sense of those words. His tone is mostly clean and pure, but also full and lush, and there's just a bit of grit too. He's as capable of nasty blues inflections as he is elegant chording. He shows flashes of speed but remains ever relaxed and easy flowing. This double disc combines a pair of Muse LPs that were both recorded at the same December 1978 date and finds Burrell stretching out in an inviting trio setting across a pretty typical set of standards and bop workouts. --Marc Greilsamer
