"yamagata defies categorization and carves its own niche ... yamagata's solos are based more on melody, tone, and clarity instead of speed and technicality ... There is definitely fusion here, but it is the more subtle welding that comes less from an individual's styles. Guitarist Joe Austin lays down a massive, warm foundation, and the rest of the band joins him or takes off from him, each swinging into the melody and back to the groove throughout every song."
Product Description
Formed two years ago out of a local improv jam, Yamagata's guitarist Joe Austin, drummer Jim Britt, and bassist Andy Neely began a series of sessions that forged the basis for the debut album "Eveland". Yamagata established itself as a hot local act in the thriving Memphis music scene, and within a year "Eveland" was recorded. The recording took place live at "the Webb Site" in Memphis, TN. with contributions from several hometown talents including Banyan keyboardist Ross Rice, jazz vocalist Kelly Hurt, saxophonists Jeff Griffith and Jeff Huddleston, and Freeworld's Steve Dolan and Prentiss Wolff-Woesten on trumpet and trombone respectively. The album is co-produced by Richard Cushing and Yamagata on the Mempho Records label. The idea behind "Eveland" is to capture Yamagata's unique energy and sound in forms that define the foundations for their explosive live performances.
