Portrait in the Mist

Chicago's jazz scene is, after New York (of course, of course), the most potent in the country and Lamb is a tenor player from the old school of expressionistic free jazz. He's as excellent as he is overlooked (another specialty among Chicago musicians) and is backed by a cream-crop: Wilbur Morris on bass, Andrei Strobert on drums, Warren Smith on vibes. Smith's vibes, as one might imagine, set the tone, and help push the album into free-bop territory, his angularity (if not his tone) recalling Walt Dickerson. The arrangements are tight, and if you're a fan of Blue Note's more experimental work from the sixties, this 1994 date comes highly recommended. --D. Strauss
