About the Artist
McCarthy is currently a full-time performing member of Blue Man Group's Chicago cast. He is a veteran of the Guitar Craft program inaugurated by King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp. His first album, 2000's The Electric Distant Surfacing which featured legendary drummer Bob Moses, garnered favorable press internationally.

SPARK AND LUMINANCE is the new album from guitarist Tom McCarthy. It is an electric and melodic blend of rock elements and jazz improvisation. It features some of Chicago's finest jazz musicians: keyboardist Fred Simon, reedist Jim Gailloreto, drummer Tom Hipskind and bassist Larry Kohut. The six compositions are all Tom McCarthy originals. Former associate editor of Guitar Player, Adam Levy, likens the music to "Tony Williams' Lifetime, Return to Forever and Herbie Hancock's pre-Headhunters group", in other words, the early fusion pioneers.
