Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Willie Sordillo has been playing the alto saxophone for over 40 years. Though his earliest jazz influences were Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, he co-founded and co-led the Latin ensemble Flor de Caña, which toured internationally and recorded for the Flying Fish label over a 10-year span. When FDC disbanded in 1994, Willie spent the next few years playing in Latin jazz and Brazilian ensembles. In addition to freelancing in the Boston scene with jazz and swing ensembles, Gospel choirs and even a 50s rock and roll band, Willie has led his own jazz units and worked as a member of the Geoffrey Hicks Quartet. His career has been varied, including several years touring as a singer-songwriter and recording two solo albums for the historic Folkways label. His compositions have been recorded by other artists and published in journals and college textbooks, and one of his arrangements was aired on the television program ER. He has performed at Boston's most prestigious jazz and folk venues, including the Regattabar, Scullers, Ryles and Club Passim, as well as at clubs and festivals throughout North America. Though he has recorded extensively with other artists, echoing is his first jazz recording as a leader.

Product Description
echoing is a collection of straight-ahead jazz tunes in the Miles Davis/Cannonball Adderley tradition. Comprised of 6 original compositions and 5 songs by other writers, a broad range of emotions and styles are explored, from the full-out swing of Beautiful Love to the anguish and passion of Billy Strayhorn's Blood Count, the spiritual soul of Amazing Grace, the funky beat of Hotcakes and the changing moods of Snow Tracks. There's a nod to John Coltrane in the 6/8 setting of the 15th century French carol, Noel Nouvelet, and the influence of 12 years of playing in Latin bands is clear in Ladrón. From the shouts of Holler to the cries of Echoes, this album will take you on a journey.
