About the Artist
JEROME COOPER has performed with Oscar Brown, Jr., Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, Steve Lacy, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Alan Silva, Frank Wright, Noah Howard, Sam Rivers, George Adams, Karl Berger, Andrew Hill, Anthony Braxton, and Cecil Taylor. He was a member of the Revolutionary Ensemble, along with Leroy Jenkins and Sirone, from 1971-1977. In that group he also played piano, bugle, and flute, in addition to his percussion work.

For over thirty years, new music baritone THOMAS BUCKNER has been recognized for his varied accomplishments as a performer, producer, and promoter, of some of the most creative and challenging music of our time. Through his live and recorded work with both established and emerging composers and improvisers, Buckner energetically pursues activity in a wide range of musical contexts; from chamber works and orchestral pieces to jazz-oriented improvisations; from computer enhanced electronic works to multi-media theater pieces, Buckner continues to merge genres and break barriers in his on-going search for the yet-to-be-imagined.

This CD is of two duets of spontaneous improvisations recorded in concert at the Lotus Music and Dance Studio, NYC on April 27, 2002. Alone, Together, Apart is an extended work in three sections that highlight both artists’ very personal forms of expression. The full spectrum voice of baritone Buckner couples formal training with freedom to roam; Cooper’s multi-dimensional drumming incorporates tonal rhythmic activator, bass drum, dumbek, cymbals, bowed cymbals, African balaphone, floor tom-tom, keyboard, sock cymbal, drumset, and talking drum into his sound. All Out ends the disc on a brief, light-hearted note.
