About the Artist
David Johnson has been a part of Cleveland's jazz scene for decades. He was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. His parents were members of local gospel groups. Listening to them sing the gospel gave David inspiration to pursue a career in music. David started playing the guitar at seven years old. By the time he was 19, he was playing the bass guitar for the O'Jays in the mid 1960's. He was on their early albums, "Soul Sounds" and "Comin' Through". David loved jazz. He was inspired by such jazz greats as Wes Montgomery, Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane. In the early 70's, he made the switch to Jazz and joined Roy Ayers as a member of Ubiquity. He was the bass player on Roy's album, "Virgo Red". David has performed with such notables as Stevie Wonder, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Marvin Gaye, Dionne Warwick, Joe Williams, Betty Carter, Dakota Staton, Jackie Wilson, Louie Bellson, The Platters, Johnny Carson's Doc Severinsen Band and the Cleveland Jazz Orch! estra. Also, he has entertained at Radio City Hall, Carnegie Hall, Village VanGuard and Town Hall in New York.
