From the Label
Yank Lawson and Bob Haggart, after tours of duty with Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Bob Crosby and countless session dates, formed their own band where music and musicianship held the spotlight, rather than leaders and guest soloists. Lawson-Haggart also incorporated their fun and free-wheeling spirit into the arrangements wherever possible. "So far as it can be categorized," writes Nat Hentoff in his liner notes for this album, "the Lawson-Haggart approach can be called swing-based Dixieland." For this western-flavored album, they chose melodies which effortlessly swung Dixie out where the skies are not cloudy all day.
