Pianist Eric Reed, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, alto saxophonist Wessell Anderson and bassist Ben Wolfe hold a reunion of sorts on Reed's Musicale. These four musicians got the best possible training in Wynton Marsalis' septet, mastering everything from early New Orleans jazz and swing to bop and modal jazz. They all graduated with superlative chops. Reed, in particular, is a fine player, able to tackle sassy rhythms and melodic variations with such authority that one reinforces the other. Nonetheless, it was Marsalis' vision and compositions that provided the spark and direction for these young musicians. Without him, they too often become the musical equivalents of writers with big vocabularies: elegant style and nothing to say. --Geoffrey Himes
