About the Artist
Eddie Harris was one of the greatest and most versatile musicians of the 20th century. He endowed the music industry with his talents as a saxophonist, pianist, composer and musical inventor. Eddie was one of the foremost creative forces in contemporary music. His work as a pioneer in electronic music as well as his union of blues, rhythm and jazz continues to have a distinct and widespread influence on music throughout the world today. Harris was born in Chicago on October 20, 1938 and sang in gospel groups, studied piano, vibes and clarinet before settling in on tenor sax and making his pro debut with the likes of Gene Ammons, Horace Silver, Phil Upchurch, Les McCann and John Scofield to name a few. Detroit native Wendell Harrison was born on October 1, 1942 and came of age just as Detroit own magnificent hard bop tradition was peaking. Barry Harris was his chief mentor, but hardly as a soloist. Gigs with Hank Crawford, Sun Ra, Marvin Gaye, Esther Phillips, Woody Shaw and Grant Green made their collective mark on Harrison's fiery tenor sound. Harrison has also become a well known and great clarinetist. He has many recordings including several that features his wordly known clarinet ensemble "Mama's Licking Stick".
