Late Bloomer [Explicit Lyrics]
Editorial Reviews His performance style and message is so wild and untamed, it gets unleashed just about anywhere he is, from the engineering cleanrooms of Motorola or the floor of the New York Stock Exchange to the streets of Austins party district, open mikes, or the Austin Poetry Slam. In venues where the lack of censure is lauded, Peters work somehow combines innocence and joy with a realization of and compassion for the tremendous amount of hurt and division in the world around him. But its more than that, whether its simply enjoying doing his laundry, or making friends with people of different races and backgrounds than the white suburbia he grew up in, theres this continual longing for truth and the reality of a relationship with His creator. As entertaining as he is by himself, Peter also lives with music churning inside him. Thus, it seemed only natural to gather musicians with the intent of doing full scale concerts in February, 2001. Soon after, a keyboardist (David Nevland), bassist (Jason Peavey), and drummer (Eric Allen) joined the endeavor. Although makin music, they needed something more and were soon helped by the prodigious talents of guitarist Paul Finley, who has just released his own, first, solo album, A.D. The musics driven by Peters writing, causing each piece to take on its own nature. The end result is a style thats a cross between funk, jazz, Pink Floyd, acoustic guitar, and word groove. Since forming their nucleus, Peter Nevland and the Neverland Band have been tearin it up in Austin on 6th street in clubs like Flamingo Cantina or the Vibe and been featured at the Hope Arts Festival and Café Mundi on numerous occasions. Theyve also played in Dallas and been featured at the Freedom Arts Festival in Port Arthur, TX as word has begun to spread of their constantly evolving style. Any music historian will tell you that theyre simply continuing the tradition of Gil Scott Heron, the Last Poets, Jack Kerouac, and other numerous spoken word artists. Peter would say that he wants to elevate the verbalized sounds of normal speech into the higher language of music and rhythm. So if you really want to capture the essence of what theyre all about, just take whats spoken and add some groove to it.

Peter Nevland didnt even think of writing anything until he came to the University of Texas in 1993 to study Mechanical Engineering. When he did start writing, what came out ended up being somewhere between a song and spoken word, not tied to a particular beat, but improvising around the rhythms that are generated by his exploding imagery and creative word choice. When asked to describe his style, Peter refers to it as spoken groove, saying that you could probably characterize his writing by imagining "Dr. Seuss on acid taking a walk through the ghetto and deciding to become the white, jive king."
