It may be a hard fact to comprehend for Southern California residents, but there is ska music made outside of Orange County. Secret Cajun Band, Missouri's latest export, craft fun, goofy, traditional ska that puts the fun back in dysfunction. Big House is Secret Cajun Band's second album and lead the sextet to be voted as the "band most likely to start a riot" by Spotlite Magazine. They take a dark edge to their music, which contrasts perfectly with their goofy lyrics and traditional arrangements. Lead singer Erik Rogers' phlegmy, pounding vocals complete the mix, creating a spicy new flavor of traditional ska. Secret Cajun Band takes traditional ska sounds, blue-beat guitar chords, adds some salsa beats, and stirs in heaping tablespoons of mirth and mayhem. The result is a fun, flavorful ska album.

Secret Cajun Band specialize in taking ultra-smooth ska and twisting it a little. They've got a definite sense of humor as songs such as "Buttsteak", "Tesfaye", and "Yardwork" illustrate, but it never gets in the way of the fact that they play kick-ass ska. This CD's stayed in my car since I got it a month or so ago and I don't anticipate taking it out any time soon; their music is so varied and fun and good.
