Serious Intentions

As the adopted son of the late harp master George "Harmonica" Smith, Clarke has familial instinct for conveying pain and loss through his visceral cadences. The songs, built on swing or postwar Delta rhythms, breathe a certain vitality as he and his friends perform attractive originals and versions of James Oden's "Soon Forgotten" and Nat Adderley's "The Work Song." His improving vocals are fillers while we await the harp commentaries. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993
