From his days as a founding member of Roomful of Blues, guitarist-vocalist Duke Robillard has taken it upon himself to explore nearly every avenue and alleyway of the blues, even expanding beyond its boundaries toward jazz, rockabilly, and R&B. Dangerous Place finds him delving into a sweet selection of swing music, and he's as proficient here as in everything else he's taken on. On songs like "Don't Get Me Shook Up" and "Take My Word for It," Robillard's razor-edged guitar is complemented by his band's terrific horn section, while softer numbers like "I May Be Ugly (But I Sure Know How to Cook)" and the title track display some extreme cool. --Daniel Durchholz
