Guitarist Teddy Morgan may hail from Minneapolis, but there's a definite Texas inflection to his music, and no wonder; he spent some time stomping around the rich Austin music scene. That diversity shows on Lost Love & Highways; there's blues here, sure, but there's rock and country as well. The mix makes for perfect road music, and at least one song, "'59 Cadillac," is a paean to the all-American road trip. The album opener "Bullet from a Gun" chugs along at a nice clip, and the easy rhythm of the title track keeps things going. The bitter lyrics of "I Ain't Waitin' No More" provides a nice contrast to the music, and the country influence is clearly discernible on "Nothin' to Go Back To" and "Run Down Shacks." If there's a downside to this album, it's that it lacks focus; the variety is a bit too great to give the album a consistent tone, yet not diverse enough to make it the focal point of the album. This is, however, quite a solid effort, ideal for long driving trips. --Genevieve Williams
