From 1955 to 1966, Excello Records put out truly distinctive down-home R&B that had the aural texture of a marsh, if that makes any sense. This stuff came out of swamps, but label kingpin (and producer and chief songwriter) J.D. Miller and his favored artists had a strong pop mentality, too. Which turned out to be a neat combination that caught on with all those young British boys in the Rolling Stones and the Kinks. They had good taste, as this terrific collection featuring label mainstays and contemporaneous samplers celebrating the works of Slim Harpo, Lonesome Sundown, Lazy Lester, Silas Hogan, and others demonstrates. --Steven Stolder
