This album is subtitled "More Songs from Venice Beach," and it's easy to imagine the late singer-guitarist sitting on the boardwalk, serenading passersby. There's a peacefulness about this music; Hawkins's playing is skillful and accomplished, and his voice goes down as smoothly as fine bourbon. In a way, it's rather ironic; Hawkins's life was anything but easy, and although he became a star overseas, he never garnered much attention in the U.S. until shortly before his death in 1995. This CD contains three previously unreleased tracks, along with Hawkins's take on several classics: "Dock of the Bay" is here, along with "Your Cheatin' Heart," "Chain Gang," and "59th Street Bridge Song." Blending elements of soul and even country with his blues with perfect aplomb, it's clear that Hawkins was an unusual talent, and it's sad that recognition of that fact came so late. --Genevieve Williams
