Wynonie Harris was in a league of his own when it came to risqué jump blues. Blessed with a powerful blues shouting voice, Harris could turn a double entendre with a sly charm that drove audiences wild, and the combination of his raucous lifestyle and devilish good looks only served to cement his reputation. Everybody Boogie! is a special collection because it brings together Harris's first recordings as a bandleader for Apollo records. Freewheeling and full of "vim, vitality, and youth," Harris shouts the blues on top of first-rate accompaniment by jazz greats like Illinois Jacquet, Jack McVea, and Oscar Pettiford. "Time for You to Change Your Tune" bounces along with cool bop rhythms. The huffing and puffing "Playful Baby" was a well-deserved hit for Wynonie in 1946, and "Somebody Changed the Lock on My Door" is "Mr. Blues" doing what he does best. --Ken Hohman
