Hoodoo: The Collection

A producer, songwriter, arranger, guitarist and pianist since he was a teenager, Dr. John is steeped in the music of his native New Orleans. This set gathers up 17 tracks he recorded for Huey P. Meaux's Crazy Cajun label in the '60s, when he was still known as Mac Rebennack. The sound quality is better than one would expect from tapes so old and obscure that the compilers are unsure of the recording dates and personnel. Among the highlights are the funky "Somebody Tryin' to Hoodoo Me," the environmentally aware "Shining As Hard As I Can (Dying in the Forest)," the infectiously rocking "I Got Lonesome-itis" and the surf-guitar/spy-movie instrumental "Flight #5." More than just a historical document, this album is a testament to Dr. John's genius. --Judson Kilpatrick
