It is difficult to find a more authentic representation of the New Orleans piano bar blues style than Champion Jack Dupree. Born William Thomas Dupree in 1910 his parents were murdered by the Ku Klux Klan while he was still an infant. Growing up in orphanages he was exposed to boxing and playing piano. The nickname "Champion Jack" was given in regard to the many years he spent as a prizefighter and professional boxer. Like many other legendary pianists of the era such as Jelly Roll Morton he cut his teeth playing in the brothels and speakeasies in and around New Orleans.
