Things I Used to Do

A guiding light of the postwar West Coast scene, Crayton was two decades past his salad days when he recorded this session in 1971. No matter. His guitar still rings with truths once shared with friend T-Bone Walker, and his vocals, less forcefully delivered but sunnier in mood, continue to do the job. He astutely refurbishes a few of his old R&B successes, including "Peace of Mind," and he stirringly adapts songs by Guitar Slim, Earl King, and others. Pedestrian backup playing hurts, though. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993
